"Be less selfie, be more bothie”, say Nokia in this 30” commercial. Amidst crispy scorpions and cheeky monkeys, the Finnish brand claim video clips can be a two-way street - courtesy of the Nokia 8’s ‘Dual-Sight’ feature. We doubt “bothie” will follow its illustrious brethren into the Oxford English Dictionary, but it’s a neat tech demo.

This film for Nokia celebrating the all-female Bikerni Biker Club in India offers a fascinating insight into how determined women have to be if they want to go against the grain of misogyny. The film itself is beautiful but it never prettifies the subject matter and it retains a sharp focus on the way these women's sense of independence has been enhanced by their involvement with the club.

"Cortana Marathon"

Every element of this grates. The idea of someone using 'Cortana' as a cross between a surrogate friend and a butler is annoying enough but we actually don't believe the phone has anything like the capability demonstrated here. But above all... that music. Anyone holding a phone in the vicinity of those responsible for that godawful jingle would be in flagrant neglect of their responsibilities if they didn't use it to silence the 'musicians' with as much violence as possible.

"Cortana Bandits"

20 Feb 2015
If you didn't think the Cortana ads for Nokia Lumia could get any worse, you may be perversely impressed by this one. "The Brit Awards are here!" says the phone's 'PA', dialling in a performance from beyond the asteroid belt. "And I'm going with Clean Bandit!" The whole thing is a litany of terminal squareness designed for people who think living on the edge is an extra sugar in their decaf coffee.

"Cortana v Siri"

The forced exchange between the two phones is like listening in on the smug school idiot pestering the cool, smart kid. We're told the Cortana can help with "you know, personal stuff" - like reminding us to leave the house to get to work on time. If we can't already do that, we're not really job material, are we? We'll stick with Siri, thanks.

This spot for Nokia plumbs new depths in commercial ghastliness. Who wants a phone that aligns them with this twerp? What buffoon needs an automated prompt to say happy anniversary to his wife... and to buy her the nearest flowers available? He's probably the kind of chap who secretly prefers Cortana to his wife.

Nokia
"Lumia 630"
30s
30 May 2014
An irritating young woman tells us she likes her new phone because it's simple enough for her ditzy brain to operate it, basically. The problem is that no-one in their right mind would want to identify with her, and so we suspect they'll stay away from the Lumia 630 (lime green cover or not) in droves. And no, showing us her idea of great photos isn't the way to make the camera look good.

Nokia
"Snow Race"
68s
25 Apr 2014
This hi-octane ad for Nokia X features an unseasonal sleigh race to evoke the notion that the model is "your fast lane" to Android apps. Using a garage-y version of the Banana Splits theme song, various brands compete to reach the finishing line first on a track of brought-in snow through the steeply winding roads of an old hillside town.

Nokia
"Camera"

28 Sep 2013
With the decline in dedicated cameras continuing, Nokia has taken the initiative and made a smartphone whose primary asset is its 41 megapixel-sensor camera. And it's clever to draw attention to the device by showing an absence of it in people's hands as they frame photographs.

Nokia
"Lumia"

Nokia is staking a lot on the Lumia's ability to reclaim some of the ground lost to Apple since the launch of the iPhone but there's nothing in this ad to suggest it has any advantage over their main rival's ubiquitous device. Indeed, this almost feels like an admission that they're behind the curve.

"Upgrade Today"

11 Jul 2011
This is a very cute way of illustrating the versatility of the advertised phones. People react very differently when they see sheep on the loose in the streets of a small town but they all use their phones to mark the event. Very nice... let's have another.

Nokia
"Poodle Loop"
90s
10 Dec 2010
A woman samples her poodle's bark and incorporates it into a musical loop as Nokia continues its bid to re-establish its preeminence by highlighting clever creative features of its latest phone. It's a nicely judged piece of weirdness.

This is a clever way of illustrating the huge array of apps which are available to Nokia users. The problem, as ever, is that Apple has successfully taken ownership of this distribution method in the minds of the target audience.

Nokia
"Foosball"
70s
10 Jun 2010
An increasingly elaborate series of tricks are performed on a table football (or foosball, as the Americans prefer to call it). The action is captured on the advertised mobile phone but its ability to record the action is pretty irrelevant.

Nokia
"Highway Manifesto"
60s
6 Jun 2010
This is a cute piece of advertising but once again we're left with the impression that Nokia is behind the curve. Boasting that they have made SatNav free on their phones more than two years after this navigational tool began appearing on mobiles is disingenuous.

Nokia
"Route 66"
70s
20 May 2010
A number of exotic and unusual journeys are undertaken with the help of the advertised device's SatNav facility. Two old boys are riding aboard bizarre mechanised unicycles while others use them as they steer elephants to their destination.

"Get Entertained"
30s
24 Feb 2010
A glossy but unexciting commercial for Nokia tries to persuade us that their latest phone will entertain us. Nokia really need to get out of the habit of advertising mobile phones in a fashion which suggests that we don't know what they are and what they can do.

5 Dec 2009
A clip from a pop promo by Rihanna is shown on a Nokia phone in this ad which also makes mention of an exclusive deal with Phones 4 U. Apparently there's an exclusive version of the popster's new album available with this phone... perhaps it's not as awful as this clip suggests.

A man uses his mobile phone to guide him to a house party. Since several of his friends seem to be dependent on his ability to find the way, it's just as well his Nokia has a navigation function and he's able to follow the simple map.

"Time Passes By"

10 Oct 2009
A short reminder of how compelling people find their Nokia phones is illustrated by a bit of time lapse showing a young man lost in a world of his own as hundreds of people pass by. This is one of those claims which may be true without being in any way good.

Nokia
"Connected Fusions"

This impressive film is all about showing how people can use the advertised phone to share things. A giant crowd are gathered together to exchange music and to enjoy a series of strange events. It's the scale that makes it so impressive.

"Thousands Of Apps"

A shameless attempt to catch up with the Apple both in terms of technology and marketing. According to this ad, there are thousands of applications available to owners of the new N97... wonder where the idea for an App Store came from.

Nokia
"Pictures Talk"

2 Sep 2009
Pictures are exchanged using Nokia phones in this ad which depicts them as speech bubbles as people talk about their contents. Strangely, this seems to have the opposite effect of the one intended as the photographic capabilities of the phone are made to look a bit clunky.
