RAC
"£50 Free Fuel"
30s
9 July 2014
UK Motor Breakdown Services

A montage of old holiday snaps and clips are combined with shot footage to convey how the RAC have been around for decades helping people have smoother trips (of the vacation kind) and sending them on their way to their destination. It's sweet and upbeat... but what'll make the punters prick up their ears is the offer of up to £50 free fuel when you join.

'Go fun yourself' is a liiiiitle too close to 'Go fuck yourself' for my liking.

RAC
"Pied Piper"
40s
11 Jul 2013
A menagerie of tools and parts assemble themselves on the depot floor and hop into the van of a waiting RAC man. Thanks to their multitude, four in five cars can be fixed at the roadside, we're told; meaning you don't have to go to the garage - the garage comes to you. Strong, simple message; nicely executed.

RAC
"Money"
30s
20 Feb 2013
A man is rather startled at the petrol pump to discover that he's £100 in credit. He watches the amount go down as he fills his car which creates the slightly odd impression that he's throwing his windfall away; but he's not... he's enjoying the largesse of the advertised rescue service and the gift he's been handed for joining.

RAC
"Toy Car Rescue"
30s
6 Nov 2012
This lovely commercial for the RAC has two boys demonstrating how useful the service can be when you've broken down. One sits helplessly in a snow shower waiting for the other to arrive in his orange-liveried toy car. The latter fixes the battery and both boys are happy.

RAC
"Push"
30s
3 Jul 2012
To illustrate the RAC's onward travel service, one of their mechanics is shown pushing a car all the way to its destination. There must have been a debate about the wisdom of showing such a low tech way of offering assistance but it just about works as a metaphor for a personal and committed service.

RAC
"Channel 4 Weather Sponsorship"
35s
15 Apr 2011
A series of bumpers advertising the sponsorship of Channel 4's weather bulletins by the RAC. Each shows people looking quite relaxed despite problems with their car... and, of course, this is entirely due to their faith in the advertised service.

RAC
"The Driving People"
40s
5 Apr 2009
Vehicles in various degrees of peril await rescue in this attractively-filmed ad for the motor breakdown service. The montage is accompanied by a cover of The Carpenters track Close To You which is more mellow than the original... if you can imagine such a thing.

RAC
"Nodding Off"
40s
21 Jan 2008
Warning from the RAC on the dangers of nodding off at the wheel. DAVID has never found the pounding beat of this flavour of the youth music likely to make him sombulistic but, hey, each to their own. The message is sobering and may strike a chord with the target audience.

RAC
"Vinnie Holds His Tongue"
30s
15 Jul 2007
Footballer turned actor Vinnie Jones is driving his daughter to a fancy dress party but faces hold up after hold up and has to remember not to swear each time. When he breaks down (again - get yourself a new car Vinnie, seriously) he cannot bring himself to name his rudely-named location.

RAC
"Vinnie's Rescue Attempt"
60s
1 Jan 2007
Footballer turned actor Vinnie Jones impulsively darts off to "get some help" when his car breaks down on a dark and rainy night. His female companion tries to stop him as she reaches for her RAC card but he's long gone. When Jones sees headlights he thinks he's found help but it is the repaired car.

RAC
"Lennox Lewis"
30s
29 Dec 2006
Former boxer, Lennox Lewis, looking like a chavish Mum on an Essex estate as he talks on the phone to the RAC in a newsagent. They ask him about the security arrangements for his car... unpleasantly, it emerges that he has a bunch of heavies who take care of that kind of thing.

RAC
"Quick"
30s
31 Jul 2006
A broken-down motorist is pleasantly surprised at the astonishingly quick service provided by the RAC as his needs are attended to before he even realises he has them. Mind you he did at least have the foresight to breakdown right next to an SOS telephone... that must take some planning.

RAC
"Cement Mixer"
30s
28 Apr 2006
Once again an RAC man is asking questions of a motorist while flying alongside using his rocket boots. It seems he's come a cropper when the car drives through a tunnel which he doesn't see until the last second. But all is well, his fast move gets him out and he re-emerges on a cement mixer.

RAC
"Promise"
20s
9 Apr 2006
This series for the RAC continues to impress. The idea is quite simple... instead of directly giving us a reason to join, they offer free bits of advice. Here an RAC asks us to promise him that when broken-down on the motorway we will get out of the car and wait on the verge.

RAC
"Quote On The Fly"
30s
31 Dec 2005
The RAC man with the impressive boots is back. This time he asks questions of a man hurtling down a motorway in another effort to illustrate how the RAC's hands on knowledge of cars will help ensure you get the best possible insurance quote.

RAC
"Bird Poo"
20s
18 Nov 2005
Latest helpful hint from the RAC has a patrolman explaining how you can remove bird poo from your car before its acidity has the opportunity to corrode the paintwork. This series may be understated but we're guessing it's no less effective for it.

RAC
"Wear And Tear Tip"
20s
14 Nov 2005
One more hot tip from the RAC: check the wear and tear on seat, pedal and steering wheel to calculate the true mileage on a used car. David hopes they also provide a workable formula for this one. Square root of m(depth of rubber erosion) x f(number of scuff marks) = miles per year?

RAC
"Car Insurance Tip"
20s
13 Nov 2005
Another helpful tip from an RAC man is the suggestion you might want to think about putting your new spouse on your insurance policy to save loads of money. This performance leaves little doubt that real patrolmen are being used in this campaign.

RAC
"Stop Tip"
20s
6 Nov 2005
More advice from the RAC and a fart gag to boot. The patrolman offers the perfectly sensible tip that you should have a light snack rather than a heavy meal when you stop on a motorway service station because the latter will make you feel sleepy.

RAC
"Diesel Tip"
20s
6 Nov 2005
Another useful hint from an RAC patrolman in this effective, if unglamorous, series... this time we are warned not to start or engines if we are among the 400 people a day who put the wrong fuel into our cars.

RAC
"Windscreen Wiper Tip"
20s
6 Nov 2005
An RAC patrolman points out that if your windscreen wiper seems ineffective it might not need replacing but can probably be restored to full working order with the use of a little vinegar to de-grease it. Unglamorous but effective advertising as DAVID found out when he followed the tip... it works.

RAC
"Satellite Navigation"
30s
21 Mar 2005
The woman in this ad is so relaxed about breaking down that she looks positively smug. This is because she is with the RAC who use satellite navigation to track her using her mobile phone signal enabling them to be with her in no time at all.
