UK Washing-Up Liquid

The Fairy baby's bad-boy cousin makes an appearance in this ad for the brand's Platinum dishwasher tablets. The cockney infant makes his appearance to a burst of T-Rex, squealing in on a motorbike to give grease and grime a kicking with his bovver boots. It's a nice subversion of the brand's baby logo signifying pureness - we'll be interested to see if Mr Mess Gone sticks around.

Cheesy but persuasive. This is one of that strange breed of ads which had DAVID thinking 'what a ghastly ad!' at the same time as 'perhaps we should try the product'. It's not an uncommon paradox and it demonstrates how an artless commercial can prove to be more effective than something more widely admired.

Fairy Liquid
"Fair"

10 Mar 2016
Following hard on the heels of an initiative from Ariel for the Indian market comes this attempt by Fairy Liquid to draw men's attention to their own domestic laziness. A series of vox pops reveal how common male rationalisations ensure that some gender biases remain unaltered.

Fairy Liquid
"Fairyconomy"
30s
12 Aug 2015
Fairy returns to the notion that every young child is keen to make a spaceship out of the advertised product. Days and weeks go by as the boy patiently waits for the bottle to empty; crossing off the dates on the calendar like a lifer in solitary. What's odd about this ad is the especially unresponsive father - maybe he thinks if he just stays silent, the moany brat will go away and leave him alone.

Fairy Liquid
"Detective"
30s
29 Sep 2014
Another dreary ad from Fairy featuring unreal mothers and their contraceptive-promoting offspring. In this case, a young lad who has donned a deer-stalker so he can emulate Sherlock Holmes and investigate the mysterious food particles left by his mother's inadequate dishwasher detergent. It's a miracle she doesn't chuck him over the Reichenbach Falls.

"School Test"

The notion of "Faireconomy" is resurrected in this spot which has school children learning about the drawbacks of false economy. One bottle of this brand is shown to go a lot further than another leading brand, and also teaches the kids a lesson about how endless the washing up always seems.

A special edition of a previous ad has been chucked together to cash in on the success of Team GB. You can now celebrate the success of our sportsmen and sportswomen by buying dishwasher tablets in gold packaging... it's almost the same as being on the rostrum alongside your heroes, isn't it?

To illustrate the advertised product's support for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, we see a little girl acting as coxswain for a crew of strapping young men. It's beautifully filmed and makes its point well but when DAVID makes a wish it's that P & G would donate more than 10p per pack.

24 Aug 2011
According to this commercial, a new variant of Fairy Liquid named Platinum is so powerful that it will clean dishes just by being in the same room as them. In fact, it'll clean dirty plates in your neighbour's kitchen. Okay, we're exaggerating but they started it.

Fairy Liquid
"Build An Athlete"

Hmmm... what exactly are they suggesting we do with Fairy Liquid? Use it as a food additive? And, in fairness, while it may take 20,000 plates of food to make an athlete, it takes roughly the same number of plates to make a lardy slob... it's just there's more on each plate.

"Timmy"

Timmy from the Shaun The Sheep spin-off, Timmy Time, pushes along a shopping trolley full of the advertised range of products. predictably... well, predictably if you've seen the programme... he spills the contents of the trolley.

Fairy Liquid
"A Lot Has Changed"
30s
20 Mar 2010
According to this commercial, Fairy Liquid is one of the few reliable constants in British life over the last half century. While everything else has crumbled into ruin, we're still able to pop round to our local grocer and buy a little cylinder of nostalgic perfection.

"Trusted For Generations"

"I hardly ever buy Fairy Liquid" opine a series of women through the ages (well, the same woman... but you know what we mean). It really does last forever... Great-Granny DAVID bought some in 1926 and it's still half full. Mind you, there's a shitload of takeaway containers out back.

Fairy supports the Make A Wish foundation which enables terminally ill children to fulfil a dream. In this sensitively-presented ad, we are reminded of Fairy's association with the charity as we see various children engaged in exciting pursuits.

"Still Dirty"
30s
23 Jul 2008
This ad cleverly highlights something that genuinely drives you barmy if you have a dishwasher... the tendency of some things to come out dirtier than when they went in. Ainsley Harriott explains how using Fairy Liquid can stop your Tupperware from turning orange.

Fairy Liquid
"A Little Pampering"
30s
1 Apr 2008
According to this commercial, because of what you put your hands through on the average day you should use Fairy Liquid to give them a little bit of pampering. Wonder if there's a viral version showing what a teenage boy's hands go through on the average day. Yeuch.

Fairy Liquid
"Cups"

Two claims for the price of one in this ad for Fairy Liquid. Not only are we shown how effective it is at cleaning up a cup that has been used by children when painting (as if any parent allows a drinking cup to be used in this way, but never mind), we are also told the stuff will get rid of bacteria in our sponges.

Fairy Liquid
"Light Bulbs"

11 Jul 2007
Third in a series that began in September last year shows what happen when you make false economies... your surprise party can be ruined by blown light bulbs. Similarly, if you buy cheap washing up liquid instead of Fairy... well, not much will happen in truth. You'll spend less money, that's all.

Fairy Liquid
"Make A Wish"

4 Dec 2006
Fairy Liquid are supporting the Make A Wish foundation this Christmas and every time you buy some they will make a donation. Ainsley Harriott voices the ad as two animated figures look at a window and see the children helped by the charity in the reflection.

Second in the series advising against making a false economy has a bank robber regretting the cheap tights he has bought to hide his identity. Clearly he should have taken some Fairy Liquid along and squirted it in the eyes of the bank staff. That's the message, isn't it? Isn't it? Oh.

Fairy Liquid
"Faireconomy"

17 Jul 2006
The difficulty of getting people to buy a more expensive product has been dealt with over the years by Fairy by suggesting that, because their glop goes further than average, it is in fact more economic and not less to buy the stuff. Provided, DAVID suspects, you apply absolute precision about how much you need.

Fairy Liquid
"Broccoli Costume"
30s
1 Mar 2006
There's something very strange about this commercial which demonstrates how it is possible to get all the washing up done with Fairy Liquid in the same time it takes a child to fetch the head of his broccoli costume.
