Comeback singles can be a tricky proposition. This is a comeback single of a different kind. Kesha’s court battle with music producer Dr Luke has been well-documented, and this promo for ‘Praying’ lays bare her scars and - crucially - her resolve.
A brooding introduction sets the tone. Kesha’s narration feels more like a lament than a roar. That the music doesn’t kick in for a full minute only heightens the anticipation. It’s worth the wait.
What emerges is a vivid collage. Animalistic and religious imagery abound while Kesha is both cut adrift and trapped in a net - turmoil made tangible. Meanwhile, a wall of televisions displays empty words. Naturally, she’s ready to end transmission.
Dollar sign shorn from her name, Kesha appears as a Technicolour revenant - ready to forgive, but never forget. Her unbound vocals make up for lost time. She even summons the elements: “I’ll bring thunder, I’ll bring rain/When I’m finished, they won’t even know your name”. Powerful stuff.
