Coronation Street
"Then, Now and Forever"

UK TV Programmes

Coronation Street now has as many years as Heinz has varieties and despite a broadcasting landscape that has altered out of all recognition since the programme's 1960 debut, it remains one of ITV's most important assets.

This celebration of the programme cleverly reminds us of some of its most famous moments. Director Caswell Coggins has craftily exploited the idea of a 'behind the scenes' perspective to keep his reconstructions distant and out of focus, which really enhances the illusion that we're looking at the real thing.

He's aided and abetted by Matt Gant's superb production design and Michelle' May's equally excellent costumes. Between them, these two elements provide the vital authenticity for a tribute as sober as this.

The only slightly strange note - literally - is the music. Surely a version of the iconic theme tune would have made a lot more sense!

An excellent trail for the upcoming series of programmes surrounding the fiftieth anniversary of ITV's flagship soap opera. Since we already know that a tram will crash on Coronation Street, they're able to reference the event in a pretty sly fashion.

Having asked Steven Gerard to appear in a trail for Coronation Street, did ITV consider that it would prove embarrassing not to use it? The monotonal Liverpudlian speaks with such dullness that listening to him is like being lowered into a sensory deprivation chamber.

Brookside veterans Sue Johnston and Anna Friel add their voices to Julie Walters's in praising Coronation Street and explaining how important the programme is to them and their families. Okay, it's not as a big a coup as it would have been if they'd secured testimonials from the cast of Eastenders but it's quite cheeky.
