Film Four celebrate the spookiest time of the year with this cracking animated film advertising the channel's temporary rebranding as 'Film Fear' for a week of horror movies leading up to Halloween. Starting with innocuous film scenes (romance, space), soon the colour palette shifts and shadow puppets act out classic horror tropes to great effect.

"Claps"
40s
31 Aug 2016
Film 4 enlist another impressive crop of big-screen talent to get clapping on camera. The likes of Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, and Brie Larson contribute to Dave Brubeck's 'Unsquare Dance' before everyone decides to kick back and chat to whoever's behind the lens. Only Emily Blunt knows what's so astonishing about the set-up, but the viewer is left in little doubt about the star quality of the channel.

"All Wrapped Up"
40s
10 Dec 2015
A wrapped Christmas gift representing the films to be shown on the advertised channel has been cleverly superimposed into familiar moments from said movies in this smart trail for Film 4's seasonal output. Watching films together used to be a huge part of Christmas in the days before Netflix, the Internet and video recorders... and some part of that legacy lives on.

Film 4
"FrightFest"
40s
18 Aug 2015
According to this amusing trail for the channel's FrightFest season, Film 4 are fully appreciative of the fact that some viewers may find some images - as the adage goes - disturbing. To compensate, they've inserted shots of adorable bunnies, puppies, and kittens among snippets of horror fare. A nice blend of the heart-warming and the heart-pounding.

We don't get to find out what's unusual about the set-up for Film 4's interviews but we certainly get to see the impressed response of the luminaries who are sat in front of the lens in this intriguing trail for the movie channel. Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller, Keira Knightley and Martin Scorsese are among those offering their amazement.

"Summer Action"
40s
22 Jun 2015
For those looking to relax on the sofa this summer but still get the old heart rate going, Film 4 presents a season of things action-packed. As characters from various movies enjoy a brief taste of sunshine, it's soon back to business dodging rockets, swinging axes, and merrily discharging bullets. Straightforward, but the backing track adds a nice hint of finesse to the fury.

"Merry and Bright"
40s
8 Dec 2014
Very cleverly assembled piece using snippets from the movies available at Film 4 this Christmas to create the lyrics to I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas. It's very on trend, as they say in the fashion mags, because clips put together in a similar way to produce new, funny constructions are a bit of an internet meme at the moment.

Film 4
"Ident"
30s
6 Sep 2014
One of a series of clever new idents for Channel 4's film channel which take inspiration from famous movie scenes. A vertical rotation also brings to mind the idea of a strip of film as the station's logo then subtly comes into view within the scene. It's a neat device and carefully underlines the station's positioning.

"Fright Season"
40s
11 Aug 2014
This cleverly compiled trailer for a series of horror films on Film 4 has a VO explaining what you should and shouldn't do when you find yourself in scenarios akin to those found in the advertised movies. Words have been inserted inside scenes from classic movies to further illustrate the points being made and the combination of the two gives everything a distinctively '4' feel.

Film 4
"Science Fiction Season"
60s
12 Feb 2014
A triumph of style over information, this spot nonetheless does have a cool vibe to it. Heralding a season of sci-fi on Filmfour, it uses a split screen to marry up images from movies about "alien species and parallel worlds" which - while looking good - is utterly confusing. Great uses of This Is Where It Gets Good by Eels, though.

Film 4
"Christmas Movies"
40s
8 Dec 2013
A fast-paced Christmassy track weaves a tale of intrigue and adventure while equally frenetic clips of festive movies blip past on our screens. This is the December line-up on FilmFour, and it would seem they've had to go licketty-spit at this trail in order to pack in the range of films we can look forward to on our tellyboxes.

Film 4
"Film Shoot"
40s
25 Aug 2013
Nicely macho ad for FilmFour +1. A rugged chap is out shooting clay pigeons - but the twist is that they're the film reels of 'guy' films like Das Boot. A thumping backing track plays as he misses his targets - the premise being that this needn't happen thanks to the catch-up channel. Wonder why they didn't choose any Jennifer Aniston flicks?

Film 4
"Frightfest"

Women wearing fetish-lite costumes are preparing the props for Filmfour's coming season of horror movies. Hypodermic needles, scissors and blood are among the items being boxed up and readied for the coming films so if you fancy a bit of gore, you know which channel to watch.

"Films That Stay With You"
30s
1 Apr 2012
To illustrate the idea that great films stay with us, clips of movies are superimposed above the shoulders of people as they make their way through life. It's a little heavy-handed as a metaphor and makes it look as though we'll be haunted by the films rather than charmed by our memory of them.

Filmfour is holding a Great Directors Season and this trail shows some of the participants talking about film. Sketched versions of the directors' visages appear on screen as we hear their voices behind which has the neat effect of implying coherence for the season.

"Films For Life"
90s

In a scene reminiscent of The Road, a bleak-looking young man crosses a desperate landscape and enters a small hut. Inside, he's able to watch old movies on a cosy looking old sofa... but who's this coming to join him?

"Opinions"

Another of Filmfour's impressive indents featuring a variety of film luminaries. A number of A-Listers including Leonardo Di Caprio and Matt Damon talk in vague terms about the process of acting and making films. There's an intimacy in the way this has been filmed that makes it feel like a series of personal messages.

"Fright Fest"

12 Aug 2009
An excellent piece for Film4 uses the gasps made by people as they watch scary movies to create a familiar music theme. The close-ups of the lips adds to the sense that people are reacting to something truly discomforting. Excellent work on a limited budget.

A superbly crafted trail for a forthcoming series of literary adaptation on Filmfour shows how films can bring books to life. This is illustrated by flicking through the pages at pace and showing scenes from the movie versions.

A number of well-known film directors are having their work featured in Filmfour's forthcoming 'Great Directors Season' and by the looks of this trail, we're going to find out what they think of their own work. Strangely, they all seem to be wearing jumble sale brown. Is that the new black?
