Ever wondered how the theme songs from The Crystal Maze or Gogglebox would sound delivered by a community choir? No? Well, er, the Co-op have you sorted regardless.

Fresh from covering Blur’s ‘Tender’, the supermarket’s choir now tackle Channel 4’s discography, including The Snowman’s ‘We’re Walking in the Air’ and even the Countdown clock.

It’s a shrewd collaboration. Both brands have emphasised community spirit this year, while each 20” jingle offers a warm twist on audience favourites. Shame Father Ted didn’t make the playlist, mind.

The Co-op party like it’s 1999 in their Christmas ad. Choirs, school bands, and rugby teams cover snippets of Blur’s ‘Tender’ before joining forces. Despite such disparate styles, the supergroup does Damon Albarn and co. proud. Diverse and melodic, the film brims with community spirit. There’s plenty of mouths to feed - fortunately, the supermarket have the catering sorted.

The Co-op continue going round in circles in the best possible way. The supermarket pick up from where they left off with their May revamp. Yet more circular imagery appears throughout this 30” follow-up. 100% British meat remains a core proposition, and the brand suggest we do our bit by sampling their £6 meal deal.

The Co-op emphasise the home-grown credentials of their fresh meat in this satisfying ad from Leo Burnett and Jake Mavity. Through a central motif of circles, we're shown various people positively affected by buying British meat - from farmers to their employees. Not to mention the customers satisfied with the quality of their rashers, of course.

"Mother's Day"

The Co-op aren’t shy about embracing the past. Since reviving their 1960s logo last year, the supermarket have emphasised traditional values and community spirit - the kind of things you see immortalised in grainy film footage. Such thinking inspires this affectionate Mother’s Day ad as a woman treats mum and the whole family to a filmic trip down memory lane.

The Co-op puts community spirit at the heart of its Christmas campaign. We watch the good times roll in for friends, families, and workmates. Smuggler’s Joshua Neale creates an appealing medley of festive moments, from a passionate kiss to revellers enjoying a chilly Christmas swim. Yet that’s only half the story. We think we know what Christmas is all about, “but what if it could do more?”

This Co-op film is one of two which focuses on community projects. We're introduced to Tony Masters - one of the volunteers working for Southport Lifeboat. One of two thoughtful Co-op films shining a light on community projects across the country. The diverse casting in this film is what really stands out for us at DAVID. The Co-op have done a stellar job of showing a wide variety of human beings in their new ad; people of all ages, races, and sexualities all need ethically-sourced products 'fairly priced and just down the road'.

Percy the Park Keeper might take umbrage with folk setting up disposable barbecues on his turf, but the peckish duo in this 10" Co-op ad look to have everything under control. It's the latest nudge towards picking up something unexpected from the store's shelves this summer, so we've only got a couple of weeks to do so until we're presumably advised to lock our spontaneity away until next year.

Rocking up at the local park with a novelty flying disc does wonders for your social life, according to this latest 10" ad from the Co-op's summer of spontaneity. Vas Blackwood's VO relates how Lizzie and Bex decided to keep the festivities in full swing by grabbing party nibbles at their local supermarket - and this commercial reinforces the idea that the Co-op are your best bet for convenient quality.

The Co-op's drive to get us inspired by the British summer's capricious nature continues with this ad charting how Meg and Greg's lunch hour has taken a watery turn. Instead of whiling away the time at their desks, the two opt for a tub of lemon and mascarpone ice cream and a equally zesty-coloured pedalo. If you happen to have a lake near your place of work, it does seem a shame to waste it.

This postscript to the main campaign is built around a get-together to watch the football. As before, the emphasis is on spontaneity in a bid to cement the Co-op's role as the place you go to when you haven't the time or energy to go to a big supermarket. It reflects what people actually do, of course, so it won't do any harm to endorse it.

"The British Summer"

This playful commercial moves back in time and forward again as it describes how some friends adapt to an unexpected moment of sunshine by holding an impromptu beach party. This proves a handy metaphor for the Co-op as a whole which has just decided to adopt a slick version of its old logo as its new logo. This looks to be a deliberate effort to move on from the financial scandals that have rocked its banking division and remind the public that it is an organisation rooted in an ethical approach to business.

In another effective demonstration of what can found in the Co-op's aisles, these shoppers say "thank you" to the items which led them to unexpected culinary satisfaction. While this lot may have only ventured forth for bananas, teabags, and wine gums, they return with the ingredients for a bonus meal. A subtle device which continues to underline the store's focus on quality and convenience.

This quartet of double-entendres from First Date maitre'd Fred Sirieix suggests that breakfast in bed can be a prelude to a day of loving on February 14th. The Frenchman has firmly established himself as a guru on matters of the heart in his role as Cupid on Channel 4's popular programme, so who are we to doubt his saucy assertions?

"Cheeseboard"

2 Dec 2015
A cheeseboard is at the centre of this short ad supporting the Co-op's main Christmas campaign. As a pair of young men slide away on the treacherous pavement ice that's left an elderly couple housebound, the recipients of their kindness conclude that the treat in front of them is like something they'd see on the telly.

2 Dec 2015
A postscript to the main Co-op Christmas ad has a couple of seniors trying to work out which chocolate is which in a box which may have been gifted to them by the hero of the longer film. There's a nicely-judged irreverence as the pair seem slightly perplexed by the flavours of the soft-centred chocolates.

Loneliness is one of the key themes of this year's Christmas advertising and Co-op's contribution to this canon of work is an absolute cracker. A young man sets off to his local Co-op to buy some ice ahead of a party he's hosting because as his flatmate rightly asks: "How can we have a party without ice?"

There's a nicely judged portrayal of family life in this latest addition to the Co-op's series of short ads. A trip to the shops for some teabags leads to this man grabbing the ingredients for a tasty spaghetti bolognese dinner as well. It looks to be a nice treat for these new parents, and the Co-op stock just what's needed for something simple and satisfying.

Another short but effective reminder that a quick visit to the Co-op can provide you with something you hadn't thought of popping in your basket. This chap only had bananas in mind, but he ends up grabbing a couple of juicy steaks as well. It shows that while they may not have as many aisles as their competitors, there's always a flash of inspiration to be had in-store.

As with others in this series, a customer pops into the Co-op for a single item and comes out with something on impulse for a handy and tasty meal. In this case, the need for some bread is what prompts the visit and - either instead of or as well as a loaf - the woman ends up coming home with a rather delicious-looking pizza.

As with other spots in the campaign, this does a good job of communicating the Co-op's range in a short space of time. The chap sitting down to enjoy his meal had only popped in for some milk, but has ended up being tempted by other items available which have enabled him to put together something tasty with very little effort.

7 Sep 2015
"I only popped in for some eggs," says the VO as we watch a couple chow down the fajitas the woman has made for tea. It's only a 10 second spot, but nicely demonstrates how the Co-op is both handy for the essentials and a source of inspiration that enables you to be a bit more ambitious with your mealtime ideas.

This well-observed film reminds us how the Co-op is able to come to our rescue at moments of need. It's consistent with the brand's strategy of eschewing the idea that we might use their stores for our main shop, preferring instead to be realistic and accept that they're there to provide us with a convenient back-up plan when we get home and discover we've forgotten something.
