UK Cars

The best of Audi's advertising tends to focus on the car as an object of desire, serving it up in a fashion designed to give petrolheads an erotic experience. The emphasis is different here but it retains an important element of the other approach... a intensely visceral soundtrack. The bass guitar riff from the 'Are You Being Served?' theme music provides an excellent sound bed to which String & Tins' Will Cohen has added an appropriate array of other noises to give this after-hours exploration of a department store real vim.

It ensures we look up and pay attention as the advertised car spins through the various floors of a closed department store, offering a representation of the fun you'll have if you use it for your shopping trips. This connects with a common fantasy about running amok in a closed department store that goes back to Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times and has featured in a lot of films in the eighty years since. And with a one-off special of 'Are You Being Served?' due to be broadcast later this year as apart of a celebration of the sitcom, this couldn't be better timed to cash in on the nostalgia for the 44-year old TV programme.

With advertising having been buried under a foot of fake snow for the last month or so, this exhilarating French ad for the Audi Quattro has skier Candide Thovex hitting the slopes without a snowflake touching him. There are no painted markers, gates or checkpoints to keep track of, either; their places are taken by cows, cramped woodland, and a trio of hard-to-impress 'spectators'. This is getting back to nature at full pelt.

It's an intriguing ad, but it raises more questions than it answers. Who are these people, and what is this beast they speak of? Where does the all-vanquishing Audi Quattro come from, and who is driving it? The only thing we can really deduce is that the car is evidently very capable of coping with harsh weather conditions while intimidating Yetis.

The Audi Quattro is pretty good with drizzle, deep puddles, soggy leaves... essentially, it's a good year-round car for the British climate. This is nicely filmed and has a punchy pace to it but do we want a car that reminds us how shit the weather is here every time we set eyes on it? Oh, probably.

Fans of the superb BBC drama Happy Valley will instantly recognise Jake Bugg's 'Trouble Town' when they watch this marvellous Scandinavian ad for Audi staking the German car's claim to be the vehicle of choice for those facing snow trouble. Two enterprising brothers borrow dad's car while the latter slumbers so they can head into the night to rescue other road users for a small fee.

Although it's hard not to be distracted by the strangely flattened VO, this does a good job of conveying the variety of hazards that winter weather can pose. Even if you're not planning on getting an Audi any time soon, it certainly makes you think about checking your tyres before the first heavy frost hits.

There's a celebration of 'grip' in this attractive film for Audi. We're reminded about the delicacy of our own sense of grip as a variety of objects are shown in human hands and Simon Callow opines about its nature. Apparently, the Audi Quattro possesses the automotive equivalent.
