UK Radio Stations

One of three well-crafted films promoting BBC Radio 3 as the home of sonic innovation. Jazz rules this housing estate as a saxophonist wanders through the block with his bandmates nestled on walkways and stairways. In the distance, two high-rises mimic sound levels being pushed to the limit. Those in favour of Planet Jazz can get their fix thanks to the advertised station's eclectic output.

Every time I see this in cinema I get angry that VW didn’t care enough about the film to find Nick a left hand drive car for this shoot.

One of three well-crafted films promoting BBC Radio 3 as the home of sonic innovation. This string quartet gives their rock 'n' roll brethren something to think about with a pyrotechnic display of instrument destruction. Once they've finished sawing, drilling, and immolating the tools of their trade, they await their round of applause. A good blend of evocative music and classy vandalism.

"Rain"

BBC Radio 3 celebrates its seventieth anniversary with a trio of films demonstrating the station's commitment to immersive programming. This execution takes poet Alice Oswald's 'Rain' and stages a monsoon in the kitchen. Not that this listener appears too fussed by her extra soggy cuppa - instead, she's content to let the words wash over her.

A neat ad for The Listening Service on BBC Radio charts the century-leaping connection between Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and 'Saturday Night Fever'. Ebullient host Tom Service describes how four notes can evoke differing reactions depending on the audience, and the trail conveys his desire to bridge the gap between musical genres.

This serves as little more than a reminder that Radio 3 exists but that's probably the task that was set. After all, it's hard to imagine anyone who doesn't currently listen to Radio 3 watching this and deciding to give the classical music station a go. Aficionados - on the other hand - may well get excited about the advertised season of music.

It sounds more exciting than it is - radio in 3D? No, sadly; it's merely a series introducing listeners to classical music. That's as specific as it gets, too, which is a shame as we'd like to know more. In this vividly illustrated spot, we're taken on a journey from sheet music through fantastical lands and celestial clouds to the accompaniment of an orchestra warming up. Or that's what our ears hear, anyway.

"British Landscapes"

Against a backdrop of landscapes the VO tells us we can listen to 20 great works every weekday morning as inspired by the British Isles. That's a lot. Unless they're very short, or a kind of medley, we're not sure how they're all going to fit in by noon. Oh - '20 Great Works' is the name of the series. Well, why didn't they say?

A beautiful trail for a series of programmes on Radio 3 dedicated to the composer John Tavener. As we look out of a window with rain dribbling down the outside, it's unclear what shapes lay behind but slowly as the music permeates they come into focus.

"Mendelssohn"

A woman pushing a toddler in the park comes across the red circle which offers a sample from Radio 3's offering. The music is from Mendelssohn and, once again, there is a persuasive suggestion that the radio station can inject a little tranquillity into our lives.

"Purcell"

A commuter discovers the red circle offering a sample from Radio 3 in an underpass. He steps on it and listens to a little Purcell and discovers that there's more to life than the rat race... if only for a few moments

Another of the ads for Radio 3 which claims that listening to the classical music station will provide you with a little tranquillity. A preoccupied couple chance across the red circle in a shopping centre and enjoy a little Haydn.
