UK Banks

Julie Walters tells us that the advertised bank aims to help over 70,000 customers with their mortgage needs. That sounds suitably vague. DAVID wants to know how long before banks have to directly address the perfect storm that expiring interest-only mortgages is going to cause in the not-too-distant future.

So Nokia phones are for students making a few bucks waiting at weddings. That's an interesting way to position yourself as a premium brand.

Another in the animated series; this time talking about ISAs because it's that time of year. A fat dog snuffles out a branch of the bank like it's a rare truffle as Julie Walters tells us that we should pop our money into their version of the tax-free plan even if we only have a quid. Every little helps... as Walters used to say on behalf of Tesco.

"Shoe Shop"

If you have nine children, you may well find it hard to keep track of your money but the free weekly balance alerts promised by the advertised bank won't necessarily be helpful... if things aren't going well they could prove to be a regular shove in the back moving you closer to the abyss.

"Smart Features"

22 Oct 2012
In a riposte to Barclays and their current account 'apps', Lloyds TSB is offering 'smart features' to their customers. It's really just a way of dressing up existing services and pretending that they're new but that's all banks can ever do really... unless they start taking in dry cleaning or something.

"Manage Your Money"

If you add 'money manager' to your current account from free then you can examine your outgoings as a pie chart. Wonder what it would look like if Lloyds TSB asked for a breakdown like this from their advertising agency?

Julie Walters tells us that Lloyds TSB have done something amazing. Sadly, it isn't repaying the billions loaned to them by the tax-payer - in lieu of that they're promising to pay 4% interest on current account balances of £5,000 or more. It seems a bit of an own goal to make the qualifying level so high... not exactly generous.

"Stadium Arrival"

This grand commercial for the bank most closely involved with the London Olympics has Julie Walters boasting of their achievements. Since the Games are considered such a success, we can probably expect to see more of the sponsors making the most of their association with it.

"Get Closer To The Games"

3 Jun 2012
Lloyds TSB is getting behind the London Olympics in a big way and this lengthy animated commercial highlights some of their initiatives. It's all very grand and we assume that the senior staff watching the best events from privileged positions will feel that this is a fair reward for everything they've done for their country.

"Online Advantages"
30s
7 May 2012
According to this commercial for the troubled bank, its online applications are "full of useful tools". This contrasts with the bank's board of directors which is full of useless tools. Anyway, it's Julie Walters babbling cheerfully as the owl bought in the previous commercial keeps the little girl and her dad company as they shop.

"The Big Trip"
30s
19 Mar 2012
When the animated family receives a postcard from dad's sister, it occurs to them that they should visit. A cash ISA from the advertised bank will help them in this endeavour by providing them with 3.4% interest per annum if they invest ten thousand pounds (netting them a grand total of £691.56 tax free if we've done our sums correctly).

"Smart Owl"

9 Feb 2012
The latest in the animated series by Marc Craste has a man helped by a timely text message to decide whether he can indulge his daughter's wish for a pet owl. The nocturnal animal then handily reminds us that Lloyds TSB offers twenty-four hour banking.

"Open All Hours"

11 Dec 2011
A little closet racism for the state-owned bank as they proudly boast that all of their call centre staff are in the UK. So if you don't want to talk to a swarthy foreigner about your direct debits then you know what to do. Bank with Lloyds TSB and read the Daily Mail.

"Busy At Christmas"

A little bit of tinsel has been added to the animation in this commercial so the message about business takes on an even more meaningful hue. Mind you, does anyone actually visit their bank any more? They don't need to be open during the week, never mind Saturday.

"Just Got Better"

7 Nov 2011
There's a tendency among banks to make it sound as though they've innovated when they're merely catching up. Anyone who banks online will already be aware that they can pay bills using a computer or mobile device, won't they? Or have Lloyds TSB customers had to wait for this service?

"Sport Week"
60s
25 Jul 2011
Another helping of the familiar animation is used to remind us about some sporting event that's happening next year. It's a year until the Olympics gets under way and it seems reasonable to expect that the cacophony will only grow.

"London 2012"

9 Jul 2011
Lloyds TSB appear to have snaffled some of those Olympic tickets that have caused such a fuss and they're making them available for their customers to win. Alternatively, some of their punters will win the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch for a bit. Which is nice.

Lloyds TSB
"£50 Challenge"
30s
6 May 2011
Lloyds TSB are using the triumvirate of Julie Walters's increasingly croaky voice, Marc Craste's animation and that annoying music to bring news of a daring challenge... apparently, they'll give us £50 if our current insurance policy is better than theirs.

Lloyds TSB
"Lost"
30s
15 Mar 2011
To illustrate the way in which we can feel lost when considering ISA options, an animated woman reaches a coming together of paths in the woods that leaves her completely baffled. Luckily, the Lloyds TSB train is on hold to rescue her.

"Money Manager"
30s
1 Mar 2011
The hamster is the star of the latest commercial for Lloyds TSB. As a couple use a new service from the bank to interrogate their spending patterns they discover that their pet is a bit of a drain on their resources. Time to send for Freddie Starr, perhaps.

"Slip"
20s
13 Jan 2011
This animated ad illustrates a new facility from the advertised bank that gives you until the end of the banking day to rectify an unauthorised overdraft. A young man trips over a crocodile and sends a fish high into the air but he's able to catch it in his bowl.

Lloyds TSB
"Treadmill"
10s
12 Dec 2010
A woman on a treadmill is able to manage her finances from the gym thanks to telephone banking from the advertised bank. The increasingly short bursts of animation used in this campaign are starting to feel a little bit light-weight. Time for some renewed oomph.

"Limit Alert"
10s
5 Dec 2010
Personal banking is a lot more civilised than it used to be. These days, if you approach your limit then you receive a text message. DAVID can remember when this was enough to provoke his bank manager to put a brick through the window.

Lloyds TSB
"PhoneBank"
10s
5 Dec 2010
A woman pulls a blindfold over her eyes and puts headphones over her ears because her husband is phoning the bank in the middle of the night. Apparently, Lloyds TSB run call centres that are open twenty-four hours a day which could be handy... perhaps.

"Big Decisions"
10s
16 Nov 2010
A man on a bike appears to persuade a couple he passes to buy the house they're looking at. This doesn't necessarily seem to be the most reliable way of coming to a decision about a pretty important financial transaction but there you go.

Lloyds TSB
"Sandwich"
10s
16 Nov 2010
A multi-tasking woman drops the contents of her sandwich on her keyboard and will be relieved to know that she can set aside Saturdays for her banking. More from the charming animated bank campaign with its cunningly gentle and reassuring vibe.
