UK Vodka

Smirnoff continue to champion diversity and inclusivity in their latest ad, created in partnership with the LGBT Foundation. The 30" piece is a glittering affair, starring DJ and producer Honey Dijon, French LGBTQ+ icon and leading figure on the Paris Ballroom scene Kiddy Smile, British transgender model and dancer Lucy Fizz, and performance artist Xnthony and Le Fil.

Celebrating the community aspect of nights out, the visuals are packed with vibrant colour, sparkle, and play as fast and loose with the concept of binary gender expression as the ad's stars do. It's upbeat and free, and a whole lot of fun.

It's admirable for a global brand to support the under-represented trans and non-binary community, and Smirnoff's history of championing LGBT causes means it comes across as sincere. No po-faced preaching about acceptance here - simply the message that everyone is entitled to have fun, no matter who they are.

Teepee, tomahawk, headdress, talisman. Hmmm. Not very PC.

"Nadia Tehran"

18 Oct 2016
The ad for Smirnoff focuses on Nadia Tehran, an Iranian/Swedish muscian best known for her song 'Refugee' and its accompanying, daring promo. Sharing causes things to change, she tells us in VO, and it's a timely reminder for an increasingly divided world. There's a great diversity of cast here that we appreciate at DAVID, and the nightclub scene is an energetic example of what 'life without borders' could - should - look like.

20 Mar 2016
This latest spot for Smirnoff's campaign promoting inclusivity features Chris Fonseca, a deaf dance teacher who - while not being able to hear the music itself - can feel the beat and gets his classes to do as he does. "We are all the same on the dance floor," he says before demonstrating the truth of this assertion with some ace moves.

Made for the African market, this energetic ball of fun follows the exploits of three young men who make their daytime workplaces their entertainment venues by night. Boxing rings provide stages for rap battles, a conveyor belt is transformed into a catwalk and a barber's shop becomes a nightclub. The interesting, unlikely choice of music - Audio Bullys' We Don't Care - works extremely well.

After searching high and wide for a bar full of suitably appalling members of the Shoreditch taleban, we'd imagine the agency suddenly realised they could film this in their in-house bar. It's good to see advertising folk leading the charge against pretentiousness... perhaps it'll inspire City bankers to launch a crusade against greed. Joking aside, it's lovingly made and does make perfect sense for this brand.

The considerable comedy talents of Adam Scott (Parks & Recreation) and Alison Brie (Community) are upstaged by a lovely performance from DC Pierson as an enthusiastic barman in this excellent film for Smirnoff out of 72andSunny in Amsterdam. This is part of a series of films that includes a three-and-a-half minute long piece unifying elements of each of the shorter films but - thanks largely to Pierson's excellent turn - we judged this to be the strongest film in the collection.

Garth Davis has had a good year. He was responsible for directing most episodes of Jane Campion's modern noir masterpiece Top of the Lake and it's a huge compliment to the Australian director that a film-maker as accomplished as Campion trusted him to do so. Despite his success in the drama realm, he continues to make commercials and he brings a huge amount of photographic skill to this Australian ad for Smirnoff.

Another take on the Adam and Eve-themed ad that broke earlier this year shows a similar arrival at the hedonistic club where anything goes... only this time, everything's tinged with gold. There's lots of fetishistic clicking of buttons and tightening of straps before an unlikely guitar solo takes centre stage.

Smirnoff do surreal with panache. Totally assured, supremely stylish, their advertising gives the brand a flavour of dangerous sophistication; suggesting it's the preference of someone with ineffable sartorial taste and an unpredictable personality. And they haven't missed a trick with this spot, introducing serpents to the proceedings.

A veritable feast of intoxicated imagery is used to press home the idea that the advertised vodka is the natural drink of party goers in this lavish commercial. As a dingy space is prepared for a fantastic gathering, a woman recites a hymn to hedonism and it's clear that much drunken fun will soon ensue. Smirnoff are pushing their luck with this approach.

Further proof that the worlds of entertainment and commerce are now so enmeshed that it's not always possible to tell them apart. Having offered us the opportunity to dance alongside Madonna on her forthcoming tour, the vodka is now giving us the chance to attend as VIP guests.

"Brazilian Cocktail"

The knob who was in New York for a previous commercial is now asking a Brazilian barman to produce a cocktail using the advertised vodka. When the besuited idiot tries to hurry our laid-back hero, he's told that this is inappropriate in Rio. Unfortunately this message is delivered without the vicious beating the man deserves.

A bespectacled man is travelling the world in search of the best drinks and he's wound up in a New York cocktail bar. There he samples a vodka, cranberry and lime which seems to quite impress him. But his journey will continue... on to the next bar and the next until he's cradled gently by the curb with the stars as his blanket.

"Crazy Nights"

6 Dec 2011
A ballady version of Kiss's Crazy Crazy Nights provides the musical backdrop for this commercial which shows people around the world letting down their hair. We're urged to make our own extraordinary night instead of waiting for other people to do it for us... yes, just you and a bottle of Smirnoff - that's all you need.

"Knitting"

10 Oct 2011
The latest commercial in this series of ads promoting ready-mixed drinks is as surreal as the other two. The dandyish brand spokesperson knits a sweater for "his best friend" but he doesn't mean his companion sat opposite, he means the dog on his lap.

Apparently, we can win a chance to dance on Madonna's next tour. To be honest, DAVID has a feeling that wouldn't work out especially well and feels that the American singer might be better off recruiting dancers in a more conventional manner. We're not African children, you know... we can't just be bought.

"Will You Be There?"

The straightforward answer is: "no... we won't be there." The vodka company is planning to import nightlife from one country to another. They stopped short of taking the Moulin Rouge to Kabul... which is a shame because that we would like to see.

How the mighty have fallen. Once upon a time Smirnoff's advertising was something to anticipate and savour. Now it's like a trail for a programme that Channel 5 would be embarrassed to run in the middle of the night.

This visually impressive ad reveals that Smirnoff have already been responsible for a series of massive parties around the world. But they're not prepared to leave it there... they want to unleash a new series of events and they're inviting us to make some suggestions to them. DAVID's idea for a drunken crèche party didn't go down well.

This postscript to last year's Smirnoff commercial reveals that we can get in on the action. A competition winner is represented by an animated drawing superimposed on some of the footage from last year's campaign. We can hardly wait.

This American ad for Smirnoff depicts a party at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. When a gong is sounded it causes a giant snowball to form as it runs down the slopes of the impressive looking mountain and eventually provide ice for everybody's drinks.

25 Sep 2009
This American film for Smirnoff shows what you can do with a few pick up trucks, some water and a determination to party. Not that we'd recommend any of the depicted activity if it also involved downing any of the advertised alcohol... it has a habit of complicating things.
