UK Pharmacies

Ogilvy & Mather’s first piece of work for Boots is a sisterly affair. An evocative sequence covers parental squabbles, teenage love, and other notable milestones. Back in the present day, the sisters prove a taste in gifts only improves with age.

The retailer itself plays a small but significant role. Various cosmetics feature thoroughout, emphasising the brand’s enduring presence in its customers’ lives. As for the soundtrack, Alison Moyet's ‘Only You’ will have fans of The Office welling up again.

Sure enough, nostalgia is already of one of this year’s recurring themes. While the brand have typically highlighted mums in their festive campaigns, this is an on-trend celebration of sibling love.

For better or worse, Wizzard make a summery comeback courtesy of Boots. Sort of. As swimmers descend on Luxworth Lido, a reworked version of ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” swaps snowmen and frosty paws for hairspray and fake tan. An upbeat montage of rapid beauty routines and sunscreen application conveys the rush that accompanies an encouraging forecast.

Boots eschew the usual cards and flowers in favour of pampering a mum who spends most of the time getting her hands dirty mucking out cows. It's a smart move to put the kids front and centre in this documentary-style film, especially when one tyke declares his mum can now have 'a good old scrub' and get 'shiny'.

Valentine's Day is looming on the horizon, so Boots have put together their suggestions in timely fashion. Thoughtfulness is the order of the day, it would seem; with hand cream for fishermen, a pampering post-rock climbing kit, and aftershave for her... so - in the months when one couple are apart - she can still smell his fragrance.

While the rest of us collapse on the sofa after one Bucks Fizz too many on Christmas Day, for others it's just another day on the job. Boots use their Christmas ad to pay tribute to those keeping us safe and healthy over the festive period. Firefighters, nurses and ambulance staff all receive their moment in the spotlight thanks to the retailer's mobile beauty section.

Three women take a break from a music festival to "change their beauty look" thanks to Boots. The trio exchange make-up tips and beauty anecdotes before settling on the right looks to wow the crowds. The ad does a decent job showcasing the retailer's beauty range, though 30" struggles to convey this jaunt as a transformative experience.

We're a long way from 'Here Come the Girls' and while a lot of glamour has been sacrificed, the serious tone of this film strongly underlines the idea that Boots is a responsible ally when it comes to safeguarding your health. The helpful young man dispensing over-the-counter medicine to tourists in South Asia is a perfect spokesperson for the brand.

This longer online version of Boots's recent commercial promoting their hearing assistance services offers a more considered examination of the benefits of what can be done to help. It's a shame it's unlikely to be widely viewed as it addresses an issue confronting many older people which manages to talk to them without a hint of condescension.

Cleverly dodging the traditional fuddy-duddy imagery associated with elderly hearing loss, this commercial for Boots focuses on a veteran bunch who like to entertain audiences with ska music. The resulting film avoids the slightly defeated vibe that can surround retirees in favour of a depiction of those who still possess a lust for life.

A group of women sit down beside a marina abroad in order to get a brand new make-up look courtesy of Boots. While they obviously have fun, and the make-up artists get to say lots of flattering things such as 'people would pay to have your lips', we don't really see much evidence of anyone coming away looking noticeably different to how they were before - a missed opportunity, perchance?

A bunch of teens are let loose on a mobile cabinet of anti-acne potions in this, er, spot for Boots. They discover which skin type they are and select various No7 products to try in the hope their inflamed flesh will improve in time for... the school disco! This, more than anything else, gives the ad a feel of the early '80s. Tucker Jenkins - where are you now?

"Did You Know?"

The intention behind this ad for Boots is smart; reminding us that it's there to offer expert advice on those significant stages of life that pass unnoticed when they're not happening to us. It's possibly more low-key than it needs to be, but at the same time it provides a feeling of reassurance - the emphasis is rightly on information rather than the way that information is delivered.

It's sort of sweet and yet sort of a bit weird... tots on a day out to the zoo are suddenly accosted by a benign woman who introduces herself as an optometrist at Boots Opticians. They are more interested in the telescope 'toy' than in her, so 'Zana' helpfully tells them there are loads of lenses in it. The aim is to show parents that eye tests for children aren't traumatic, and on that level it's quite effective.

Apart from one lone lad tackling a non-existent spot, all the faces in this Boots skincare ad belong to women. Given the supposed rise of the metrosexual, where are all the blokes seeking to get their glow back, love their laughter lines and "take on these wrinkles"? Oh, we forgot... despite embracing the concept of scruffing lotions et al, men don't get judged for their skin in the way women do...

Boots's Christmas ads in 2013 and 2014 both packed a real emotional punch but we can only assume that didn't translate into success at the tills as they've dropped that approach in favour of a more traditional piece of seasonal advertising. It draws attention to the retailer's special offers and has plenty of sparkle but it's not one of this year's highlights.

The festival of fun known as the British summer is almost upon us. So Boots is stocked up and ready for us to descend on their branches in search of sun cream and so forth according to this ad, which has people apparently talking to us as though we're participants in their lives... like Peep Show only without the filth.

In this attractive ad for Boots No 7, a time-lapse technique is used to convey the idea that our lives can feel as though they're operating in fast-forward. That's the hurly-burly of modern life for you... but using the advertised serum, you can at least ensure that your skin is in slow motion and that you'll look as fresh-faced as you did when you were younger.

Boots make use of their No7 cosmetics gizmo again as they promise to find the perfect foundation and concealer for customers. There's nothing striking about this but it gets the job done.

After the fanfare and vivacity of the 'Here Come the Girls' campaign a few years ago, the store never really managed to keep up the momentum as a Christmas campaign to look out for, but this commercial follows up on last year's excellent, downbeat 'Small Town Boy' to deliver a stunning piece of work that's every bit as tear-inducing as the John Lewis ad... but with quite a bit more resonance.

A lovely ad for Boots features a busy dad out and about at meetings in London. He discovers his young daughter's has left her toy dinosaur in his bag, which may be her way of asking him not to be too busy to think of her, or just to help keep him safe... it's whatever interpretation you want to make of it. It gives him an idea to bring home proof that she and her dinosaur are with him all the way, with a little help from Boots.

How can you miss the big name brands available in the high street when they loom high above the other buildings? Well, obviously you can't - and that's the idea. Boots are now promising to have the cosmetics of your choice in your local store if you order them the previous day so even if you live in a remote fishing village you'll be able to slather implausibly expensive cream across your face night after night.

So this is a lip synch gag at the start, is it? And once the clever gadget's been used then the lips are back in synch because they're now matched to the surrounding skin colour? If that's right then it's quite clever but our slight doubt about it makes us worry a little because either (a) it's not quite clear enough or (b) we're wrong.

An old feller and his young companions are getting ready for the local pub quiz amid all the hubbub in the bar. His companions appear surprised in the way people do when a senile old relative unexpectedly says something lucid.

Boots reminds us that they have all sorts of appropriate Mothers Day gifts for whatever qualities you most appreciate in your mum. It's rather sweet, and implies that even if you've left it till the last minute you're not going to have that panicky, sinking feeling you get when you buy emergency flowers from the garage - whatever you get from Boots will look like a considered and thoughtful choice.

This is sweet... disparate people proudly arranging their spoils which they've picked up on a three for two offer at Boots. We've all done it at some time or other... bought items which we've then carefully arranged in a drawer, on a desk or a shelf; knowing that we'll enjoy using them but, just for a short time, admiring them in their pristine perfection even more.
