UK Bread / Bread Products

Peter Kay stars in this brilliant Jane Austen spoof for Warburtons created by WCRS and directed by Declan Lowney. It's the third outing in a highly ambitious campaign which is rapidly establishing itself as an advertising institution.

With previous instalments starring Sylvester Stallone and the Muppets establishing a broad eclecticism, it was hard to anticipate where Warburtons might go next in their annual bid to create the most noteworthy commercial of the year.

The answer was provided by The Sun back in May when they carried advance word of the new work... the prominence they gave it demonstrating that this is a campaign which has really caught the public's imagination.

Peter Kay may not be as eye-catching an inclusion as Sly Stallone but he is one of the UK's most popular performers and one who lights up the screen with his charisma.

It's a three minute tour de force from the Lancastrian in an ad that has an agreeably chaotic feel - creating the impression that every idea they had was crammed in somehow. The highlights are a spoof of a much-parodied scene from Ghost and Kay's indictment of Jonathan Warburton's acting skills: "is he hell?"

It's bold these days to make a big statement with your TV advertising and it's glorious when it pays off... as it clearly has here.

Et tu, Cheggars? The diminutive, unemployed TV presenter has apparently broken away from his daily routine of stealing jokes on Twitter (and then blocking anyone who has temerity to expose him for doing it) in order to spend time bothering Jonathan Warburton in a bid to plead his case to be the celebrity in the next ad.

Louis Walsh may have narrowly missed out on a stay in the Australian jungle for 'I'm A Celebrity...' but he hasn't missed out on a namecheck in the latest teaser for Warburton's. The colourful Irish music mogul has apparently been harassing poor Jonathan Warburton on a daily basis... the fiend. Do celebrities have to give their permission to be mentioned like this? Do they get a fee?

According to this brief teaser, Gareth Gates is pressing his case to be the next celebrity to take part in a spectacular Warburtons commercial... though - in truth - he may merely be angling for a tour of the bakery as the ad suggests. It raises the question: who can follow Sylvester Stallone and The Muppets? Our money's on Vladimir Putin.

The Muppet Show's recent revival on Sky doesn't seem to have caught the public's imagination particularly, but that might change when they get a look at the new ad for Warburton's featuring Kermit and the crew. It opens with Kermit the Frog (or "Mr the Frog" as he's formally introduced) turning up at the offices of Jonathan Warburton. Like Sylvester Stallone before him, Kermit wants to pitch an idea to the baking supremo.

It isn't really possible to be a 68 year old action hero unless you have a pretty good sense of humour and - throughout his acting career - Sylvester Stallone has frequently shown both a desire and an ability to produce decent comedy performances. Even so, it was a bold move by Warburtons to invite the Hollywood superstar to front their spectacular new commercial and there must have been a degree of nervousness among those paying for this extravaganza.

Love the way the music sounds straight out of one of those 'zany' 60s movies like 'Beach Blanket Bingo' - and the styling's very good too. The whole ad does a pretty fine job of distracting us from the suspicion that Warburtons Thins are anaemic white sliced crusts which have collided with some pitta bread and come off second best.

We're scratching our heads here - what exactly is going on in this spot? There's a nod to the confessional letter-writing concept that's currently on air, but this montage of images and Python-esque animation suggests someone discovered the budget had run out unexpectedly and had to improvise very quickly indeed.

Julie Palmer writes to Mr Warburton to tell him how she vanquished the "cheap toaster" her husband was obsessed with heating crumpets in... by buying a bigger toaster. Hmm. That's rather like saying 'I put an end to my husband's affair with his secretary by setting him up with my two best friends.' Sadly, Julie seems to have missed the point that the toaster was just the facilitator - all she's really doing is fighting crumpet with more crumpet.

It's a nice conceit - the budding ladies' man tempting the fair maid with his pancake toppings while love rival Harry looks on. However, he is nothing if not determined and, as he triumphantly recounts to Jonathan Warburton, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Or top a pancake. The whole spot is very attractively filmed and our prepubescent Romeo is excellently cast.

Warburtons have turned out some terrific ads in the past, and here's a new one to add to the list. Long-suffering Sam Saunders writes to Mr Warburton about his bossy brother, but confesses that with the assistance of the brand's new Half & Half loaf, he can afford to play the long game.

A mum tells her young son to grow her a bread tree using seeds from a loaf she's just baked. He tells her not to be stupid - but not for the reasons we expect. This ad for the northern baker has that same homely feel as the 1970s Birds Eye ads... only we suspect today this TV mum wouldn't so readily be called stupid.

Warburtons
"Grandad"
30s
30 Jul 2013
This commercial for Warburtons has a little girl anticipating a visit to her grandfather. She talks about all the things she dislikes about him, including the marks on his teeth and the smell of fish in his house but she's in luck - it's her other grandfather she's off to see and she likes him on account of the bread he favours.

A single dad discovers that bread attracts the women in his office in much the same way Lynx attracts sexy sirens to young guys. He only has to wave his buttie about for them all to come flocking, and is compelled to write to Warburtons about his find. It's as if the doughy goods manufacturer has discovered an old ad from the '70s, and is airing it in the name of scientific curiosity.

When a crumpet-adoring relative (so to speak) dies, his nephew writes to Warburtons to let them know how much his uncle loved their product. We see affectionate scenes of the old chap before hearing that he was also fond of the gee-gees and left the family nothing. They console themselves with crumpets, wryly reflecting that money isn't everything.

"Greg Jones"

Terrifying Greg Jones has been turned into a right old softy by the advertised bread and he doesn't care who knows it. In fact, he's taken the trouble to write to Jonathan Warburton - the company's chairman - to let him know how the bread has transformed his life. Must have been scary casting this one.

A mum describes her twin boys as though they are 'Midwich Cuckoos' in this ad for Warburtons in which she thanks the bread company for producing a loaf that enables her to get some healthy grain past her fussy youngsters. DAVID would be inclined to supply the charmless duo with stale crusts.

Various people hear some startling news in this ad which uses slow motion to very good effect. It's a good example of a hyperbolic claim presented in a tongue-in-cheek fashion successfully imbuing a product with a kudos that it doesn't really possess.

This postscript is designed to underline the idea that the bakers of Warburtons celebrate each loaf with equal enthusiasm. It follows the ad which shows the excitement generated by the millionth loaf swiftly followed by a similar response to the 1,000,001st.

This charming ad for Warburtons builds on the idea established in earlier commercials that the staff at the bakery are so proud of the bread they produce that each loaf is special to them. Here, there's a huge celebration for the millionth loaf but is it only because of the landmark number?

There's drama at the Warburton's factory as the staff come to terms with the fact that one of the bakers has burned a loaf of bread. A wonderfully over the top reaction from the supervisor is matched by the other staff and a familiarly emotional soundtrack.

This marvellous piece of hokum for Warburtons shows one of the delivery men receiving the best wishes of everyone who works in the bakery in a style that's reminiscent of a Battle of Britain pilot about to take off into the skies during World War II.

It's sunrise in Warburton world, and not only is the sun itself rising over the horizon - the very houses themselves are emerging from their slumbers underground. It's done to sweet effect; and as the family converge around the breakfast table, we see how the efforts of others (cow included) ensure there's a nice loaf waiting for us in the morning.
