You’d think Santa would run a tight sleigh at this time of year. However, Specsavers reveal his solution for underachieving employees: the Useless Elves Department. While the gaffer prepares for his annual flight, one elf struggles with the concept of flamingo slippers. Naturally, the brand suggest a more practical gift.

This amusing ad for Specsavers highlights their ability to visit you at home if extenuating circumstances - like being stuck in a tower - prevent you from getting to them. The charming animation harks back to classic Disney, as a knight heroically faces down a dragon to get Rapunzel her free home eye test... That's a whole new level of customer service.

To mark National Eye Health Week, Specsavers recommend viewers peel their eyes away from the telly. This simple animated commercial asks what’s more important than creating a memorable ad. Why, good eyesight, of course. While harassed creatives may take umbrage, the optician suggest we all make a potentially eye-opening appointment.

This amusing ad from Specsavers illustrates the importance of getting your hearing tested... particularly if you communicate by radio. We see a bloke working at a remote station, surrounded by snow, emptiness, and very little in the way of supplies. He sees a plane dropping off a crate and rushes to open it... only to be greeted by something unexpected.

Specsavers's long-running campaign has rarely focused on children's glasses, so this latest entry is a welcome diversion. While a music aficionado (the wonderful Cavan Clerkin) tends to his collection, his son is busy washing the dishes. Alas, no matter how hard you scrub, some plates just won't come clean. In this case, there's a sound explanation....

A visually-impaired plumber attempts to drain a faulty boiler in the French countryside... which goes about as well as you'd expect. This ad is shot beautifully, bringing to mind some of the classic-era Stella commercials; and the comedic timing is spot on. We fear for the patrician chateau owner when he realises his irreplaceable wine has gone down the drain... sacre bleu!

This is like a cross between Paul Weiland's famous 1980s Guardian ad and the more recent Virgin Atlantic film featuring superhuman stewards and stewardesses. A woman walking down a high street carries out what appears - at first - to be assault on a random passer-by. Her work doesn't end there... she also intervenes to save a toddler in a pushchair from a nasty encounter with a cement-mixer and a skateboarder from a collision with a concreted surface.

As long as there are folk wandering the streets with dodgy peepers, Specsavers will continue driving home the message with gems like this ad, set in a museum after the last visitors have departed. The protagonist decides it's time to call it a day and dutifully begins turning off the lights... proving a costly end to his shift.

Reading FC's real groundsman must be shaking his head in dismay while watching this latest Specsavers commercial. This gent dutifully applies the pitch markings at the Madejski Stadium before heading off after a job well done. Alas, this is the latest individual who should've gone to the advertised optician, as one team has to make a violent 90-degree turn to bear down on goal.

"Fawlty Car"

There was some debate at DAVID HQ about the number of stars we should give this. It's John Cleese reprising a scene from one of the greatest comedies ever made and while it's not the first time he's been asked, it's the first time he's agreed to do it... that, in itself, ought to be enough to earn it five stars. Add to that the fact that it's such an iconic moment from Fawlty Towers and you've surely got a combination of assets that makes it impossible to be churlish about any creakiness in Cleese's performance.

Specsavers have been brilliant at poking fun at people who are short-sighted but jokes about the hard of hearing are clearly off-limits. This earnest piece of communication explains how Pearl Marsland's life was improved when she got a hearing aid... though you'd think good hearing would be a pre-requisite for someone who volunteers as a coast watcher!

"Films on Four Sponsorship"
30s
30 Aug 2015
A gently amusing set of Channel 4 sponsorship bumpers provide a Specsavers twist on black and white melodramas. As is typical of the brand, the moody imagery is undermined by characters announcing their fuzzy grasp of the situation. Let's hope the leather jacketed protagonist eventually finds his way to Al's Bar and his spouse.

"Help With Hearing"

Hearing loss has yet to receive the comic treatment Specsavers' advertising is renowned for, but a gentle gag helps this straightforward treatment along. This ad explains the high street retailer's hearing aid service clearly with a reasonable enough delivery. Great for this woman's hearing, though not so great for that struggling violinist's prospects.

Another amusing misunderstanding at the Highland Games sees a tug of war team put their all into the contest. Their combined strength is more than enough for them to emerge victorious... mainly because it's the dancing tent they pull down. Their lovely celebrations at the end make it all the more amusing.

Ahead of the Highland Games this summer, participants in the caber tossing would be wise to visit Specsavers to avoid this chap's embarrassing folly. Approaching his target with determination, he unfortunately puts his training to waste when he tries lifting the tannoy out of the ground. Another scenario to tick off the list for the long-running campaign.

"Digital Precision"

11 May 2015
This rather lengthy online film explains how a snapshot taken of your eyes instore with a tablet can give a wide range of precision readings in an instant so you can choose the right lenses for the right frames. Stephen Fry's distinctive voice accompanies stripped-down animation to create an engaging piece that holds your attention.

This delightful spot shows just a few of the ways that glasses can be lost... and why if only their wearers had gone to Specsavers it wouldn't have been such a pain. What's so lovely about the ad is the way the message creeps up on us. It's only as the scenarios accumulate that it dawns on us there's a theme... and the way we're returned to the ever-rising teddy is a triumph.

"Vet (for C4 Comedy Gala)"

6 Jun 2014
Another Comedy Gala ad, and another opportunity for Alan Carr to talk about his "bits". Here, the hat that the Specsavers vet thinks is a cat in cardiac arrest turns out to be Alan's capacious merkin; and he has a strop when he discovers the veterinary nurse has gone off with it. Cue the end shot where the real cat gulps as Alan casts his eye around for an appropriate substitute.

Apparently you can get hearing aids from Specsavers as well as glasses; so if your hearing is failing along with your vision you know where to go. The aids are made by "one of the world's leading manufacturers" and are "packed full of digital technology", which is the least you'd expect really. It's probably important for Specsavers to balance their funny ads with informational work like this but it's a hell of a contrast.

A hapless See-Threepio keeps wandering onto the wrong set in this series of bumpers for Movies on 4 by Specsavers. Instead of Studio 6, he finds himself in the middle of some Dickensian drama thanks - we can assume - to his poor vision rather than his discalculia. It's nicely underplayed, and we like the increasing level of irritation around him as he repeats his mistake.

This is one of those commercials that has such a perfect moment of unexpected comedy that you enjoy it each time you watch it. We're talking - of course - of the moment when the elderly residents of a care home resign themselves to the mistake unfolding in front of them and gamely attempt to follow the energetic moves of the myopic fitness instructor.

"Rugby Ref"

29 Jun 2013
This ad highlighting Specsavers's sponsorship of the referees in the recent Lions tour of Australia uses the campaign's iconic conceit to show what can happen when rugby players' eyesight isn't all that it could be. The poor ref is hoisted by the players in a line-out and then runs for his life toward the try line. Fun.

Specsavers have done some excellent ads over years, and this is up there with the best. Played with just the right amount of Holby City pseudo-low-key drama, a vet calls out for adrenaline and an IV line when he can't find a cat's pulse. The nurse comes in and slowly picks up the cat. Or does she?

A coquettish Alan Carr turns up in this familiar ad for Specsavers as part of Channel 4 Comedy Gala. The bespectacled comedian is alongside the original protagonist who mistakes Gordon Ramsay's kitchen for a sauna. This has a much lighter touch than the previous spoofs in this line and is the best we've seen yet.

The Specsavers ad which has a young lad making a terrible mistake with his remote control has a new ending. To underline the extent to which the advertised company understands the demands placed upon glasses by children, we are offered a demonstration of their toughness.
