UK DIY Retailers

B&Q continue to jump between intimate domesticity and orange aprons. Seemingly on call for any renovation project, the DIY retailer’s staff now make short work of this woman’s living room. Nimble choreography and prop work convey the ease with which anyone can transform their homes. Good cushion juggling, too.

"Bank Holiday Deals"

23 Aug 2017
B & Q continue their united aesthetic in this ad for their latest bank holiday deals. If synchronised sign moving was an Olympic sport, this DIY team would surely be in the running as they demonstrate their skills by displaying offers on home improvement products for in and outside the house. We don't know who's going to clean that paint off the floor, mind.

Leo Burnett’s B&Q work continues to put family first. A bathroom karaoke queen provides her parents with constant entertainment - though her new flat’s shower is a poor replacement. Luckily, mum and dad provide her with a new ‘stage’ (complete with sliding door). Should give punters pause for thought ahead of the Bank Holiday DIY rush.

B & Q have gone a bit IKEA in this stylish ad suggesting a grown up approach for the brand. We follow a father as his family ages around him, slowly outgrowing the space in their cramped bathroom. He fixes the problem (eventually... he has a grandchild by the time he gets around to it) with items from the space-saving Imandra range. A classy, well-shot montage.

"Rearrange"

B & Q’s workforce prove they’re a coordinated bunch in this well-realised commercial. To the strains of ‘Sliced Tomatoes’ by the Just Brothers, this woman’s kitchen transforms multiple times during a flowing sequence. Clever set design and photography help sell the various configurations available at the advertised retailer.

"Effortless Garden"
30s
6 Apr 2017
We recently got our first taste of Leo Burnett's B & Q work and it’s a marked shift from WCRS's approach. While the brand look to be heading in a more emotive direction, this is a good showcase of their garden wares. Cuppa in hand, this bloke wonders how he's going to assemble his dream garden. Good thing there's an army of orange overalls ready and willing to help.

"New Brothers"

23 Mar 2017
B & Q's spin-the-bottle approach to appointing advertising agencies has made Leo Burnett the latest custodian and this film is the first TV work this new relationship has produced. It's a modern take on sibling rivalry as two boys roughly the same age are thrown together by the coming together of their parents.

"Mandi"
20s
21 Nov 2016
B & Q add a festive spin to their in-store heroes series as we’re introduced to Mandi a.k.a. The Queen of Christmas (sorry, Mrs Claus). Trolley brimming with decorations, Mandi helps customers find everything from the right tree - be it magical or musical - to a glowing snowman. Perhaps Leicester City Council should've paid a visit before decorating their tree.

"Louis"
30s
13 Sep 2016
B & Q introduces another in-store hero wearing the retailer's orange apron like a boss. Louis struts through the kitchen department in slow motion while the VO uses a variety of cooking-inspired terms to describe his prowess. While Louis walks the walk, he's also got the right attitude when it comes to helping customers with their kitchen design queries.

"Clark"

B & Q change course from their cast of animal DIY enthusiasts to focus on the in-store heroes who make our home improvement whims a reality. This execution introduces us to Clark in all his slow-motion glory as he helps customers find the right shade and the right brush for the job. A less furry direction for the retailer, but it should help remind punters to get their painterly essentials ready for the bank holiday weekend.

B & Q
"Koalas"
30s
3 Apr 2016
Considering these koalas' affinity for the barbie, perhaps moving to the changeable conditions of the UK wasn't the wisest idea. Regardless, it's not enough to deter the human-sized marsupials from sprucing up their back garden for social gatherings. Funnily enough, it's the first time in this fun series the voices have 'matched' the animal.

"More Beavering"
30s
30 Mar 2016
More easy-going chatter from B&Q's home improvement-conscious rodents as their thoughts now turn to the garden. As Mrs Beaver tends to the new lawnmower, we learn Mr Beaver is always keen to take advantage of the DIY retailer's deals. While spring hasn't fully sprung just yet, the brand once again posit themselves as the ideal destination for those keen to exercise their green fingers.

B & Q
"Beavers"
30s
23 Mar 2016
B & Q's DIY animal kingdom grows with the addition of Mr and Mrs Beaver - and they do the industrious reputation of their species no harm at all. The fact that two human-sized beavers shopping for peat is of no consequence to fellow customers works nicely, and their easy charm allows the ad to balance entertainment and talk of flooring offers with ease.

"Zebra"
30s
17 Mar 2016
WCRS have made an inspired choice for the new colour spokesperson at B & Q... a debonair zebra determined to get away from the 'black and white' choices of his parents. There were many ways they could have brought the equine character to life and we thoroughly approve of their choice... having a human body with a zebra head allows him to interact with the staff at B & Q as though nothing is out of the ordinary.

"Yellow Handbag"

28 Jan 2016
A zingy lemon handbag gives a woman all the momentum she needs to get down to B&Q and start choosing paints to revamp her home with. Turns out there are over two million shades to pick from - with a little help from their friendly assistants - and lots of special offers too. We can only assume the DIY superstore is trying to prompt us into doing a bit of Spring sprucing-up with them before anyone else suggests it.

"Portals"

7 Sep 2015
A woman gets closer than ever before to her dream kitchen in this clever ad for B&Q. Not content to simply look at the pages, she dives into the DIY store's range in pursuit of her ideal cooking space. The VFX work is especially well done, and it really illustrates the feeling we have when we decide to wholeheartedly throw ourselves into redesigning the heart of the house.

"Lavender"
20s
26 Apr 2015
If a bit of interior decorating doesn't float your DIY boat, you might turn your ambition to the great outdoors and transform your garden instead. This lingers a little too long on a lavender promotion, but it still has a nice degree of verve to it and we like the playful twist on the old line about coming up smelling of roses.

B & Q
"Two Million Colours"
10s
21 Apr 2015
Our smiling B&Q chap does a nice turn in these ten second spots. They work well as back-ups for the longer ads, as the idea itself is simple and doesn't need much explanation. Visually distinctive and appealingly silly, they make sure we remember the Valspar name and the sheer number of paint shade possibilities available.

B & Q
"Satsuma Shake"
10s
22 Apr 2015
The familiar-looking fella at the DIY store's paint desk transforms a pair of satsumas into maracas which he uses as percussion when a host of brass instruments suddenly appear out of nowhere. We like the, er, zest with which he approaches his colour-matching challenges even if in reality the experience of requesting this service is fifty shades of drab.

B & Q
"Gardening Offers"
20s
19 Apr 2015
This ad worries us a little. The lovely creative approach developed by WCRS for B & Q is relegated to the first five seconds and the following fifteen is a lingering shot of some flowers while a VO artist babbles on about something or other. B & Q need to keep the faith if they want to benefit from the advertising they've invested in.

B & Q
"Paint Pros"
30s
17 Apr 2015
Another lovely piece of camp nonsense for B & Q suggesting their staff are ready for anything ambitious punters can throw at them. Word of advice to B & Q: to avoid all-round disappointment, watch this commercial and then take the necessary steps required to make your staff as helpful as they appear in it. As things stand, your staff are vying with prisoners at Guantanamo Bay for the title of 'most unhappy people forced to wear orange'.

B & Q
"Bold Banana"
10s
16 Apr 2015
In this amusing short, B & Q boast that they can mix any colour we want so long as they can scan it. The assistant happily uses a child's toy to create a shade of pink before he's surprised by a banana being pushed into his hand by a big ape. We can tell the fella's an actor rather than one of the retailer's famously miserable staff because of the good humour with which all of this is done.

B & Q
"Parachutes"
30s
16 Mar 2015
This is a smart device for B&Q to use in their fast-turnaround promotions. The distinctive orange and white branding on buckets being lowered by parachute creates strong visual recall of what the ad is about: lowering prices. As such, various items can come to the fore on their way down, each with their own orange and white 'chute.

B & Q
"Valspar Colour Match"
30s
4 Mar 2015
This cheeky-looking B&Q chappie can match you any Valspar paint colour you like so long as your sample fits in the scanner (and is made of a compatible material, according to the small print). Cue the entrance of even cheekier Sock Steve, whose cyan coat gets removed to leave him naked on national TV. Gosh. Nicely cast and neatly done.

B & Q
"The Big Switch On"
40s
12 Dec 2014
A lovely energetic ad for B&Q which features footage from people who have proudly decorated their homes; ostensibly with lights and more from the DIY store. It's joyous, fun, and has a terrifically festive feel. Everything from battery-operated toys to house fronts have joined in and the impression is of watching brilliant memories in the making.
