UK Lagers

Budweiser takes the time to show off their packaging in this intimate ad. The camera slowly crawls up a temptingly cold bottle, sweating like the White House press secretary before he opens Twitter in the morning, before we see the brand's distinctive twist-off cap in action. The cap then becomes a crown, tying in with the 'King of Beers' tagline. Confident stuff.

"Sholing F.C."

25 May 2017
Budweiser reaffirm their support of grassroots football in this engaging film. As more illustrious clubs spend hundreds of millions on new stadia, it’s a sore point for clubs like Sholing F.C. Having seen progress stifled in the past by league criteria, the Hampshire team must work hard on and off the pitch.

"Bud Light Frogs"

9 May 2017
Budweiser remake their classic Beer Frogs in this film announcing Bud Light's availability in the UK. A direct reinterpretation of the original commerical, the gang are back in the swamp - croaking away with the addition of a blue friend who represents Bud Light's distinctive packaging. 'Bud Light Beer' isn't quite as iconic a chant, but it's a pleasing callback nonetheless.

Budweiser's Super Bowl ad follows the journey of Adolphus Busch as he emigrates to the US to achieve his brewing dreams. He faces xenophobia, fire, and toil before he finally reaches St Louis and meets Ebert Anheuser - the man with whom he would establish AB InBev, today the world’s largest beer company. It's a timely reminder that the United States and all its corporate giants were built by one kind of person - immigrants.

"Super Bowl Teaser"

Budweiser’s Super Bowl teaser has a timely feel to it. A man walks into a bar (no joke forthcoming) and is greeted with derision by one patron: “You don’t look like you’re from around here.” The ad promises to chart Adolphus Busch’s journey to the United States as he eyes a brewing empire. Let's see how this immigration story plays out.

This 30" edit of Budweiser's 'Time' ad brings some new footage and an extra guitar twang to the party. The brand's presence is more visible throughout, while a glimpse of a suffragette march gives the beer's time-honoured philosophy some historical heft. The original 60" execution is driven by a superior beat, though this version still promotes patience as a worthy trait.

Conor McGregor is an Irish practitioner of the 'sport' known as the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC (basically a pub brawl with a referee) and even though he was defeated in his most recent contest, he remains a heroic figure in his home country. In his ad for Budweiser he tells us our dreams should scare us. DAVID's dreams often scare him, especially that one with the giant fire-breathing goat.

"Dream Goal 2016"

With Gary Neville currently under the cosh as Valencia manager, Jamie Carragher steps into the vacant punditry slot as Budweiser's Dream Goal competition returns. Under his and Jamie Redknapp's expert gaze is Chapeltown Fforde Grene F.C. Not the most likely exponents of Total Football, but Fernando Moke's mazy run and curling finish is Super Sunday quality for the studio.

Budweiser are on the front hoof with this Super Bowl commercial featuring the beer's famous Clydesdale horses. To an abrasive soundtrack, the ad sets out everything the brand stands for... and that not everyone will enjoy the party. As the competition with craft beer rivals continues to build, this feels like an assertion of dominance from Budweiser, albeit one reliant on familiar imagery.

Budweiser
"Helen Mirren"
60s
2 Feb 2016
No-one can beat the inimitable Dame Helen for sexy schoolmarm charm, and in this spot for Budweiser she enunciates with split-atomic precision what she thinks of drink-drivers. As this is for an American audience, her clipped tones carry even more clout. Whether they're familiar with her or not, that posh voice and no-nonsense attitude will have them listening with a healthy degree of respect and - for some - a veritable frisson of pleasure.

The adage that timing is everything is given its due with this precision work of percussion from Budweiser. The 'Whiplash' effect is still going strong, and Adam Hashemi's commercial channels the raw power of a drumbeat with masterly control - demonstrating that the patient approach is the one that reaps the most rewards.

There's something very sweet about this commercial which shows how Budweiser helped trick a small band into thinking they were playing a tiny venue when - in fact - a massive crowd was waiting for them in the theatre next door. The jolt that one of the band gets when the crowd starts cheering is pretty priceless.

"Power Couple"

Budweiser pitches itself as one half of the original power couple of the consumables world, with burgers as the other. Does this make them Jay Z and Beyoncé? If so, which one's Bud? But before we can get into a fascinating debate about this – or indeed, widen the discussion to suggest there are other options available in both camps, supers inform us there is no argument to be had. That's shut us up, then.

"Quirky"

28 May 2015
Budweiser's Dream Goal competition crowns its winner and it's a deserving victory for Barnton Town AFC's Colin 'Quirky' Quirk. With trademark poise, Gary Neville highlights the brilliant teamwork shown in the set-up to the goal, while Jamie Redknapp sums up Quirky's "audacious, delicious chip". A fine conclusion to a well-realised campaign.

"Dream Goal"
90s
30 Mar 2015
Every amateur footballer has on one occasion or another held court down the pub with an exaggerated summary of a wonder goal they scored. Budweiser taps into this by offering the chance for Sunday leaguers to have their playing field screamers analysed by the likes of Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp.

Budweiser
"Lost Dog"
60s
28 Jan 2015
Budweiser squeezes out another tearjerker for this year's Super Bowl with the help of a cuddly puppy. The little dog gets lost, and as he tries to make his way home - to the strains of a gentle version of The Proclaimers' 500 Miles - he gets threatened by a snarling wolf. However, rescue is at hand. As with the previous ad, it firmly associates the drink with wholesome, pastoral qualities - quite a contrast with, say, the values of Bud Light.

"Rise"
30s
14 Jun 2014
Moody black and white film of pensive people, cityscapes and crowds are designed to give weight to this Budweiser ad for their Rise brand; and yes, it does give the drink some much-needed style. A roaring stadium "rise as one" to their feet in celebration of some goal or other just in case we don't get the link between the beer and the footie.

Budweiser
"World Cup"

28 Mar 2014
There's actually been remarkably little World Cup-related advertising so far this year but this commercial promoting a competition that will see some lucky punter win tickets to the World Cup Final will soon be followed by a ton of new work related to the event. European advertisers - in particular - cannot get enough of football and their dedication to this event makes their interest in the Olympics seem paltry by comparison.

"Puppy Love"

30 Jan 2014
Budweiser's Super Bowl commercial is so soaked in saccharine that sensitive viewers may find themselves choking on their beer on Sunday. This is plainly what the brewer intended and they won't be displeased by the response or even by accusations of mawkishness. There's something daringly old-fashioned about this approach... almost every other Super Bowl ad this year will rely on snarky humour and it's actually refreshing to see something played entirely straight.

"Rihanna: Half of Me"

The testimony from fans is the most compelling aspect of this eleven minute film about Rihanna. It impressively segueways from an account of their admiration for their idol's achievements into a series of touching statements of their own hopes and ambitions... and even descriptions of personal survival.

People engaged in various artistic endeavours draw a little sustenance from the overly-fizzy beer in this monochromatic homage to the dudes and dudettes who get things done. It's from the wallpaper school of advertising but that's not necessarily a criticism - as long as it sustains the brand's values, there's nothing wrong with this sort of thing.

"Paddling Out"

29 May 2013
This zippy ad looks like a night out on something a tad more peppy than lager - especially as it uses Miike Snow's 'Paddling Out' (reviewed at our very own Video Zoo). But its energy is infectious, making it the perfect spot to put you in the mood for a good time with your buddies and your Buds.

"FA Cup Final"

11 May 2013
Kenneth Cranham provides the VO for this commercial underlining Budweiser support of football in England from the grass roots up. FA Cup Final day may have been cheapened by a succession of bad judgements by the sport's custodians but for many fans it remains the pinnacle of the football calendar - and this film catches that sense rather wonderfully.

"Football Fans"

A nicely knowing ad for football fans everywhere. People gathering in the build-up to a big match as the atmosphere heightens; the mad last dash to the pub before kick-off; the celebrations after the final whistle - all brought together by Budweiser. There's even a chance to win match tickets... so grab yours now, as it were.

Clydesdale horses have long been part of the Super Bowl traditional, and this year is no exception. This ad depicts the progress of a new foal to fully-fledged Budweiser Clydesdale through the eyes of the man who raised it. He watched proudly as it pulls the beer wagon through the streets with its team-mates... but isn't expecting what happens next.
