A scant fifty days before Santa comes to town, Tesco have released the first in a series of five Christmas ads. We see a series of festive moments play out across the nation - all focused on the star of the meal: turkey. Diversity is the order of the day here, as families of all races, religions, and orientations are shown preparing their bird for the big day.

Carrot farmer Ben is a straight-shooter. When asked what he enjoys most about his job, he replies: “Growing carrots”. Tesco celebrate Ben’s hard graft in this latest Food Love Story. With pitchfork in hand and a smile on his face, green-fingered Ben reveals how his vegetables make it to Blue Supermarket’s shelves.

"Not So Scary"

Tesco show us a Food Love Story with a spooky twist in this Halloween-themed ad. It's an amusing way to switch up the campaign, taking a more comic approach than previous examinations of earnest food lovers. We see Vanessa - who takes her fashion tips from Morticia Addams - whip up a 'not so scary' chocolate tart for her son's Halloween party.

Andy grovels for forgiveness via flatbread in this latest instalment of Tesco's 'Food Love Stories'. Having 'a few mates over' spiralled into a house party (which doesn't look all that wild, to be fair), at which point his parents came home to find their home rammed with da yoof. Let's hope a slap-up breakfast can convince them to forgive their remorseful a son.

This instalment of Tesco's 'Food Love Stories' campaign stars Liam, who really loves fish. No, he really loves fish. His enthusiasm for his job is endearing, as he describes his family background and refers to himself as 'one with the fish'. These insights into people's personal relationships with food work best when they feel genuine, and this ad achieves that in spades.

Now armed with a contactless Tesco Clubcard, Ruth Jones and Ben Miller exchange more culinary puns in the Blue Supermarket car park. Jo and Roger's weekly shop has earned them six-hundred-and-fifty Clubcard points. Ever the card, Roger insists they’re “squids in”. The man’s on fire - alas, we’ll never hear that leek gag.

Ruth Jones and Ben Miller communicate almost entirely in food puns in their return for Tesco. Following a prolific Christmas campaign, the pair took a break before making it back to our screens to debate where to go for their long weekend away - Brussels or Seville. Their Clubcard points can now contribute to the cost of the trip, so they can probably afford to take their dopey teenage son along too... although we hope they don't.

"Family Makes Us Better"

31 Jul 2017
This poetic Tesco commercial is a family affair. The supermarket delivers an ode to domesticity as various families navigate life’s ups and downs. While the film draws on familiar imagery, it also celebrates how no two family portraits are alike. Shot through a sensitive lens, “exquisitely bland” becomes engrossing.

"Tampon Tax Off"

Tesco take to the streets to inform consumers that sanitary products sold in their stores will no longer be subject to the 'Tampon Tax'. To offset the tax - applied because sanitary products are classed as a 'luxury item'... unlike razors and condoms - Blue Supermarket will reduce the price of such goods by 5%. This ad shows women from all walks of life are happy to hear it.

As the countdown to results season begins, Tesco have released this timely instalment of 'Food Love Stories'. Dee prepares her 'fingers crossed' paprika burgers while waiting for her son to get his exam results, trying to bring good vibes to the big day. The ad ends dramatically as her kid walks through the door - let's hope those lucky burgers worked.

As parents run the gamut of school uniforms, Tesco introduce a personal shopper to help. Abigail - “a small child!” - puts the supermarket’s F&F range to the test. Director David Stoddart coaxes a likeable performance from his prodigious sales advisor, but is it enough to draw families away from Tesco’s budget rivals?.

Tesco
"The Tender Tomato Grower"

Tesco’s ‘Food Love Stories’ strand now hits the fruit and veg aisle. Having caught the gardening bug as a child, this tomato picker takes pride in his harvest. The man’s in his element as tomatoes stretch as far as the eye can see. By returning to the source, the supermarket assures customers that their fruit is handled with care.

Foster parent Birdie has cared for over eight hundred children - plenty of time to perfect her jerk chicken recipe. She underlines the importance of a home-cooked meal for those undergoing big changes, and how food always brings people together. After all, "love is wholesome, and love is power" - a worthy sentiment during these troubled times.

Tesco

With supermarket waste under increased scrutiny, Tesco tackle the issue via their 'Food Love Stories' strand. This latest instalment sees Bo'ness Academy pupils put Blue Supermarket's excess stock to good use. The brand comes across as a responsible retailer, while locals pining for a banana bread fix know where to go.

"Tricked You Salmon"

Ali's husband refuses to eat healthy food because it's boring and doesn't fill him up. But instead of trying to disguise the salmon she's bought for tea, she simply tells him they're having a treat - which results in him tucking in with gusto. Presumably she can also wean him off deep-fried gubbins by telling him it's as virtuous as a lettuce leaf.

Another instalment in Tesco's expansive 'Food Love Stories' campaign takes an intimate look at gourmet chef Derek's love of vegetables. It's interesting to examine high-level cooking without the meat, and the produce here is shot with a loving care which makes it look irresistible. While Derek never gets around to explaining what his 'plant based philosophy' is, we'd certainly eat his food.

Tesco's bid to bring emotional depth to our grub continues with lamb connoisseur Helen. She's making sure her student son enjoys a proper home-cooked meal. Scott’s a good lad, isn’t he? With Mum relieved of her Tesco checkout duties, he treats her to a surprise day out. It’s a rather eclectic itinerary: massages, pottery, and even a trip to the local driving range. The supermarket reminds us that spending time with our mums is the most important thing… though a bottle of Prosecco and chocolates can't hurt, either.

Tesco
"The Cheese Fortune Tellers"

14 Mar 2017
This 'Food Love Story' features a passionate cheesemaker who, uh, uses cheese to tell the future. Well, sort of. 'Richie Cheeseman' (as he's known to his friends) is responsible for selecting the young cheeses which will eventually grow up to be Tesco's finest mature cheddars, and we see a little of his process here. Dairy divination at its best.

Another warm ad from Tesco's Food Love Stories campaign explores the relationship between a boy and his grandmother through food. The kid might not like carrots or peppers, but the veggies are just the ticket when they're blended up as part of Nana's Magic Soup... complete with a star-shaped cheesy crouton on top.

Tesco’s latest Food Love Story sees Alice attempt to sweeten things after a family argument. She regrets what she’s said to her stepmum… but luckily, the teenager is a dab hand when it comes to baking cupcakes. A more serious tone compared to previous instalments, though it’s good to see this campaign depicting different family dynamics.

Tesco's latest 'Food Love Story' is a baker's love-in. We join the supermarket's dedicated breadmakers as they turn flour, yeast, and water into fresh loaves. One chap even confesses: “I eat probably too much bread.” It aims to show Blue Supermarket’s staff take as much pleasure from making the food as we do eating it.

It's pleasing to see the campaign introduce some variety and explore different kinds of love.
