Hopes and dreams.
When a little girl called Maddie is told her wishes will come true if she is good as gold, she takes the advice to heart. She obeys every instruction; carries out good deeds without being asked; and generally does everything she can to meet the most exacting definition of 'good'. To what end? Until the reveal, we are perhaps imagining that she is hoping for a special Christmas gift. But, it's not that... she simply wants an end to the poverty that she endures. The jauntiness of Stevie Winwood's 'Higher Love' provides a certain amount of misdirection as we witness Maddie's determination to be good, offering a hopeful vibe that she will get what she wants. The twist is like that of a knife, an uncompromisingly cruel reality which will be faced by tens of thousands of children this Christmas. The advertised charity can help, but only with public support... and this film may well boost their efforts to generate the funds they need to make some kind of difference.
