LAY OUT THE FRED CARPET
18 October 2021

You'd be hard-pressed to find anybody working in the advertising industry who has as much exuberance and enthusiasm as Naomi Simpson.

Here at DAVID, we've known her a long while, and she has always been hustling in the most positive way on behalf of her directors, and navigating the numerous pitfalls of film production to ensure an outcome that pleases everybody.

Her company Fred was originally established as an agency of directorial talent and it will continue to operate in that capacity, but this year Simpson has added a major new string to Fred's bow by also running it as a fully fledged film production company.

A few weeks ago, DAVID caught up with Naomi and Gerald McMorrow - an old friend of both hers and DAVID's - at a busy club in Soho where we talked about their working history; Gerald's career in America; and how excited they both are about Fred.

A couple of weeks before we made this recording, DAVID had the pleasure of a lengthy catch-up with Naomi beside the swimming pool at Shoreditch House, and during that conversation she laid out her hopes for Fred.

She was very candid that day, and unflinching in her verdict of the way the advertising industry sometimes exploits directors. We've rarely been more certain of someone's sincerity when they claim to want to do things differently. Naomi cares passionately about doing everything the right way, and it's an approach that deserves to succeed. And it will.

Naomi's pride in her directors was evident again last week when she brought seven guests including Gerald and myself to the world premiere of 'Phantom of the Open' at the London Film Festival. It was directed by Fred's Craig Roberts, and Naomi was beaming as Roberts took to the stage ahead of the film, alongside those who helped make it including Mark Rylance who stars in it and Simon Farnaby who wrote it.

The film itself is fantastic - a brilliant blend of pathos and comedy - and looks certain to be a huge hit when it goes on general release next spring.
