Those weary of microtransactions and photorealistic graphics may wish to visit Southampton Football Club’s website for a more old-school kickabout.
Developed by London-based production studio UNIT9, ‘Defying the Odds Since 1885’ is an 8-bit side-scrolling platformer/football game that marks the club’s one-hundred-and-thirty-fifth anniversary.
Capturing Southampton FC’s long history in a retro 8-bit pixel style was no easy feat.
Set across three levels, the arcade throwback sees players dribble and jump their way through Southampton’s ever-changing streetscape, avoiding the odd World War II bomb along the way.
Eagle-eyed gamers will also find nods to Saints alumni like Graeme Souness (1996-97), Marian Pahars (1999-06), and Matt Le Tissier (1986-02). There’s even a chiptune version of ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ for good measure.
Kits and equipment change throughout.
Such details are a source of pride for UNIT9’s creative director, Kate Lynham: “Capturing Southampton FC’s long history in a retro 8-bit pixel style was no easy feat but the resulting game is a suitably light-hearted and humorous throwback to the team’s most classic moments.
"By including plenty of Easter eggs along the way, ‘Defying the Odds…’ is a sure-fire way to get football fans smiling while promoting the new home kit in a really fresh way."
The game can be accessed via the Southampton FC website and a smartphone QR code scanner. Opposition supporters will be nonplussed, but Saints fans will naturally enjoy this 8-bit season finale.
