Bethnal Green’s Genesis Cinema hosted the second annual Papaya Rocks Film Festival on Thursday 27th February, and there was plenty to keep fans of no-budget cinema entertained.

A joint effort between organisers Papaya Films and sponsors Twentyfour Seven, Radioaktive Film, Platige Image, and Lemonade Reps, the event featured twenty pieces of work from independent talent, including Best Director winner Wanjiru M Njendu.

The Kenyan-born filmmaker impressed with her short film ‘Boxed’, which tells the true story of nineteenth-century American slave Henry Box Brown and his unorthodox method of escape: posting himself to an abolitionist state.



More light-hearted fare included Best Micro Short winner ‘I Love Tennis’. Directed by London South Bank University graduate Sam W Buffery, it’s an amusingly honest (and mildly suspect) insight into a man's love of the sport - from sweaty thighs to the “heaving breast of a deep breath.”

As you can see, this year’s crop kept selectors on their toes. According to programmer Niger Asije, this simply brought organisers and entrants even closer together: “The months of planning the Papaya Rocks Film Festival have allowed us to connect with the filmmakers in a unique way.

“This connection has helped to create a community that will continue to share, encourage, and support each other,” says Asije, “as these inspiring and passionate directors take the next steps on their filmmaking journey.”
