 It's the work, stupid.

EDA 2019
9 January 2019

An annual contest in Ireland which aims to identify and nurture new directorial talent has sent a strong signal of intent by renaming itself. It will no longer be the Young Directors Awards after the decision to switch its moniker to the Emerging Directors Awards instead.

While this may seem a semantic change to some, its significance will be clear to many - directors of any age should feel able to pitch their films and it's hoped that older debutants will feel encouraged by this change.

At a time when the advertising industry is facing accusations of discrimination on every front, a growing number of voices are challenging its ageism, so this is a shrewd move, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see other awards schemes follow suit.

The awards were set up with the goal of finding, nurturing and rewarding the best up-and-coming talent in Ireland today. We felt with ‘Young’ in the title we were making age a factor when it shouldn’t be.

 ”

The very modest entry fees - €50 per entry, half that for the student film section - make the EDA one of the most accessible talent searches anywhere and its committee is hoping to see a fine collection of work popping into its inbox between now and the 6th February deadline.

One of those committee members, Executive Producer Rebecca Bourke said: "The awards were set up with the goal of finding, nurturing and rewarding the best up-and-coming talent in Ireland today. We felt with ‘young' in the title we were making age a factor when it shouldn't be. We want to be very clear that we are open to all emerging directing and production talent once they fit into the criteria within the categories."

It’s really hard to keep tabs on all the different emerging talent in Ireland. This is the one night that draws all that talent from all areas including outstanding craft in animation, inspirational short films and even speculative commercials.

 ”

Publicis's Ger Roe who is also on the committee believe the event is a critical one for unearthing new talent: "It's really hard to keep tabs on all the different emerging talent in Ireland. This is the one night that draws all that talent from all areas including outstanding craft in animation, inspirational short films and even speculative commercials. Creatives, Creative Directors and producers alike get to see all the emerging talent together in one night. As a communications agency our creative product has benefited massively from the EMAs. In the last three years alone we have used eight directors across a number of our different accounts."
