BRAZILIAN PEDRO GIOMI JOINS FLIPT
31 January 2024

New signings at FLIPT are rare because of the company's commitment to maintaining a small, carefully curated roster, so it's always a significant moment when a new director is signed. So, DAVID suspected Brazilian Pedro Giomi must be worth shouting about... and then we watched his showreel and discovered that he definitely is.

In this brilliantly funny ad for Mix Brazil, Giom amplifies the stereotyping of gay people and the ways in which they are insulted to suggest the advertised festival is for everyone. It's an attention-grabbing piece of work that ensured the event was extremely well attended, and did its bit to fight homophobia as well.

To illustrate Giomi's eclecticism, take a look at this film drawing attention to the plight of those suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, and those who care for them. The weighty tone is underlined by the use of a glitching effect to represent the increasingly confusing moments as the condition worsens. It's a very sobering evocation of a frightening malady.

We've probably all heard of one or two of the strange laws invoked by this film for this pro-cannabis film, but the way Pedro Giomi has brought them to life adds a whole new dimension to them, and it's pretty much a guarantee you won't be familiar with all of these legislative oddities. Watch and enjoy.

Barcelona-based Giomi says of his new UK home: "It’s great to be joining FLIPT’s carefully curated roster of directors, the work they do is so fresh, I am excited to be a part of it, and excited for 2024"

While Philippa Thomas says: "Pedro’s Brazilian curiosity, humour, warmth, and imagination floods through his work, creating a style that is uniquely his and sets him apart. We are thrilled to have him join FLIPT and great things lie ahead for him."
