Thursday June 25th marks the first (and preferably last) lockdown edition of Straight 8’s Industry Shootout.
With this year’s Cannes online-only due to the coronavirus pandemic, Straight 8 will stream all thirteen entries live on their website instead. The show kicks off at 2 p.m. GMT here.
The venue may have changed, but the format remains largely the same: each entrant is sent a roll of Super 8 stock which they must use to shoot their film. This must be done in accordance with self-isolation guidelines.
Any form of editing or post-production jiggery-pokery is also prohibited. What you see is what you get from all thirteen competing companies, which adds to the event’s rough-and-ready appeal.
Voting takes place on the day and a prize pot will be donated to the winner’s chosen charity. This might not be the contest Ed Sayers and co. envisioned a few months ago, but it's defintiely worth a shot.
