VOICEOVERS: A LAUGHING MATTER.
13 August 2021

As host of Channel 4's The Last Leg, comedian Adam Hills plays a key role in the broadcaster’s Paralympics coverage. His latest contribution may be offscreen, but his presence is hard to ignore.

The Australian provides audio description for Channel 4’s Tokyo 2020 Paralympics trailer. It's a warm, dynamic, and witty performance, and shows how the right script can let a comedian shine. So, who else has made their voice count over the years?

Matt Berry

Every now and again, even DAVID can be caught unaware and so it was when a tweeted link sent by actor and recording studio regular Matt Berry passed across our social media horizon in 2015.

At first, we took this Veterans For Peace commercial to be a piece of comedy. Edgy, for sure, but not out of step with the Toast of London co-creator's canon of work. However, this brilliantly realised spoof of an ad for Action Man actually has a deadly serious message about the age of many of those who join the British Army.

Peter Serafinowicz

Peter Serafinowicz's slightly nasal yet deadpan delivery of an excellent script makes this Weetabix ad a memorable treat. A chap who has chosen to boil an egg for his breakfast stands by the pan waiting for it to cook as the VO addresses him.

Throughout, Serafinowicz's VO questions Greg laconically. What: no bread to go with the egg? How long has it still got to boil? Then there's the necessity of letting it cool down before you peel it. That's going to be tricky, isn't it?

Julian Barratt

Move over, Gordon the Boar - there's a new anthropomorphic gin connoisseur in town. His name is Mr Swan, and he's the focal point of this terrific commercial for artisan distillers Sipsmith.

Realised through deft stop-motion animation, Mr. Swan (voiced by Julian Barratt) saunters through the ad whilst outlining the gin's production process. He may be fowl, so to speak, but Barratt's Swan proves a witty and entertaining advocate for the brand's wares.

Ellie White & Tim Key

This 30" animated launch ad for Bulb sets out the energy company's stall in wry fashion. And what better way to pique viewers' interest than with a monstrous kelp plant?

Said gardening crisis is neatly brought to life via minimalist animation and dry voice work from comedians Tim Key and Ellie White, as their characters segue from talk of power suppliers to rapidly growing tendrils.

James Acaster

Keen to promote good mental health as well as witty banter, Dave partner with the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) for this ad break takeover narrated by channel regular James Acaster

The work encourages viewers to "be the mate you'd want", and sometimes that means simply reaching out to a friend to check if they're OK. Four minutes is a demanding prospect, but Acaster's storytelling nous keeps viewers engaged.

Obviously, this is a very male-centric list... we'll take a look at female voiceovers in the near future. Who are your favourites?
