BAFTA TRIUMPH FOR EDWARD BERGER

Sweetshop director Edward Berger had a big night at the BAFTAs in London as his version of 'All Quiet on the Western Front' picked up seven awards. They included both the Best Film and Best Director accolades, making the First World War drama the most successful film of the night by some distance.

Edward Berger is not someone to get over-excited and he took the series of awards in his stride on Sunday night as he and his 'All Quiet on the Western Front' cohorts steadily wore a path into the BAFTA carpet as they strode between their seats and the stage with monotonous regularity.



Rather beautifully, Berger credited his daughter for persuading him to take on the project: "I went home and I wanted to discuss it at the dinner table, and my daughter, when she heard the title, said: 'You have to do it! You have no choice, I just read it in school!'... so, thank-you, Matilda, for giving me the confidence, and turning the doubts into faith and trust."

Sweetshop's Justin Edmund-White is enormously proud: "Edward’s film is an instant classic, and will be studied at film schools for decades to come inspiring the next generation of film-makers."
