BALOJI JOINS ACADEMY FILMS.
20 July 2020

Academy have signed director and musician Baloji to their ever-expanding roster of talent.

Something of a creative polymath and modern-day renaissance man, the Congolese artist has touched audiences worldwide with his work across poetry, film, and music.

Initially creating visuals to accompany his own songs, Baloji has spent the past decade honing his style to become a critically-acclaimed filmmaker.

His work combines artistic vision with a documentarian's eye for detail, as seen in his unique explorations of African culture. The promo for 'Peau de Chagrin / Bleu de Nuit', for example, blends Congolese pygmy wedding traditions with painterly set pieces to create a rich visual experience.

Both deeply grounded and simultaneously surreal, the film is a testament to Baloji's delicate hand and demonstrates the director's passion for blending tradition and modernity.

His work is both exuberant and timely, and much needed in today's political climate.

 ”

His latest short film 'Zombies' takes things even further, bringing together tribal motifs and digital culture to explore our double-edged relationship with technology. Baloji flits between genres effortlessly, incorporating elements of slice of life drama, dance, and science fiction to make his point about the hypnotic quality of smartphones.

It will come as no surprise that the film created a stir when screened at festivals around the world, and received numerous awards - including MUBI's Short Film of the Year in 2019 - in addition to widespread critical praise.

As Baloji looks forward to new and ambitious projects, including his first feature film and a hybrid VR experience, it's easy to see why Academy are so pleased to welcome him to the team.

Academy's Head of Music, Maurizio Von Trapp, is a long-time fan of Baloji's and says: "We are incredibly excited to add Baloji's voice to our roster. His work is both exuberant and timely, and much needed in today's political climate. He makes films for the future, he asks questions that aren’t being posed, and he does it with dexterity and poetry. Academy is very lucky to have him."

For more information about Baloji's latest projects, get in touch with George Floyd at george.floyd@academyfilms.com or on 020 7395 4155.
